Without an iota of doubt, Vinu Chakravarthy is one of the most versatile actors around in Kollywood.
The 67-year old actor, who is a Commerce graduate, has starred in more than 1,000 films as a comedian, villain and a character actor in languages such as Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Malayalam.
The actor, who was on a self-imposed break due to his backbone problem, is now back with Desingu Raja.
A function was held in Erode wherein Vinu was presented with the coveted ‘lifetime achievement award’ for serving the film industry for close to four decades now. Vinu spoke at length and spoke in a mixture various emotions after receiving the award. “Raghava Lawrence’s hit film Muni was the landmark 1000th film in my career. After the film, I met with an accident which badly affected my backbone.
“I went to London and stayed at my son’s residence for treatment for a long time. Recently, director Ezhil got in touch with me and asked me to play Vimal’s grandfather in his Desingu Raja and I accepted the offer to be back in Kollywood. I started my career first as a policeman and then shifted to Railways. I later quit the job to become an actor. Had I continued as a cop, who knows, I could have even become an Inspector General now.
“Being a cop would have made me known only among police circles but being an actor has made me famous all over the world,” said Vinu and continued “I’m always referred to as the ‘lucky token’ by superstar Rajnikanth. I have starred in 25 films with him and all those films have turned out to be super-duper hits. Rajni believed that if I’m cast in his film, the film would be a success. I’m thankful to him for that belief.
“The ultimate reward for an artiste is the applause and appreciation he/she gets from the audiences and fans; no amount of awards can compensate for it,” concluded Vinu.
