A rough estimate by industry folks puts the amount so far spent in producing, marketing and publicizing Kamal Hassan’s upcoming film Vishwaroopam at Rs.55 crore, easily making it the costliest film to have ever been made involving Kamal Hassan. The film’s audio-launch is expected to be held this month to be followed by the film’s theatrical release next month.
Produced jointly by PVP Cinemas and Kamal Hassan’s Raj Kamal Films International, Vishwaroopam also joins a very small list of Tamil films made with a very high budget. Kamal Hassan plays the lead role in the film and has Pooja Kumar and Andrea Jermaiah as his heroines. Veteran Nasser, who has played many significant roles in his career in Kamal Hassan’s many films, gets to essay an important character yet again.
Contrary to press reports which said earlier that Kamal has played dual roles in the film, he plays a single character which takes a different dimension as the film enters the second-half. He has reportedly played Viswanath, a Kathak dancer, and an FBI agent working for the U.S. Kamal Hassan has clarified that the film won’t be very long in duration and has assured that a sequel to the film would be made in the near future.
“At the time of launching Vishwaroopam, we were highly confident that the film would click with the audience in a big way. As such, we are planning to make a sequel to Vishwaroopam. 40% of the shooting schedule of the sequel has already been completed by us. I’m sure that the script of Vishwaroopam would give food for though to the audiences,” says Kamal Hassan.
The film is widely expected to be released on 15th August on the eve of the 65th anniversary of the country’s Independence.
