Movie: Saguni
Star Cast : Karthi, Pranitha, Santhanam, Prakash Raj, Roja, Raadhika Sarathkumar, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Kiran Rathod and Nassar.
Director : N Shankar Dayal
Producer : Antony Xavier
STORY:
The film starts with the demise of CM (Chandramohan), a political plot produced by Bhupati (Prakash Raj), thereby starting the film on serious note. Then, we are introduced to Kamala Kannan (Karthi), who tells his story to the auto driver Apparao Durai alias Rajini (Santhanam).
Apparao Durai assumes that Kamala Kannan is rich and drives him around the city to be profited for him.
Kamala Kannan is a country boy, who is working in a small company. He has come to the city to meet the concerned politicians and plead them to halt a subway project, by which he could lose his property in his village. He is the son of a humble person, who serves unlimited food to the guests and passers-by every day. Under this background, he has come to Chennai to settle the matter, as the forefather’s property is living heaven for the family.
Kamal stays in aunt’s (Roja) house and love blossoms between Kamal and her daughter Sridevi (Pranitha). The love affair breaks up as it was not accepted by her aunt.
He meets the politician, baddie (Prakash Raj), who once visited their village during the election campaign and had promised to do good needs when required. But, Kamal comes to know he is the one behind the project. This makes Kamal to teach him a lesson and safeguard his property. The remaining part of the film shows how the game is played by Kamala Kannan.
PERFORMANCE:
Karthi’s performance is neat and decent job. At most of the times, he shines with his comic timings.
Pranitha has got a very small role, though she has done her best to amaze the audience.
Santhanam, who played the comedy role, can be said as the real hero and the lifesaver of the film.
Andrea and Anushka have done guest appearances in the film.
Prakash Raj as usual has done his character in a classical way.
Roja, Raadhika Sarathkumar, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Kiran Rathod and Nassar have done their small role appealing.
PG Muthiah’s cinematography is decent.
GV Prakash Kumar has scored music. ‘Kandha kaara vaadai…’, ‘Vella bambaram…’ and ‘Manasellam mazhaiye’ are more appreciated by the audience.
Shankar Dayal, debutant director has failed in the first attempt to create an impact. The director fails on both the aspects narration and characterisation of the film. Particularly, his screenplay seems to be illogical at some places.
COMMENTS:
Karthi’s Saguni (Sakuni) is an ordinary story with weakest screenplay.
The positives of the movie are Karthi’s performance, comedy of Santhanam and cinematography. The movie is not so great and also not so bad either. It is one time watchable film.
Karthi’s film Saguni receiving a U certificate without getting any cuts has released worldwide in 1150 screens in Telugu and Tamil. The other Tamil movie to release in more screens was Rajnikanth‘s Endhiran: The Robot.
The movie is released today as “Saguni” in Tamil and “Sakuni” in Telugu.

Finally, there’s a big release in Kollywood! Karthi who has earlier graced Tamil cinema with five blockbusters is back with a political satire, ‘Saguni‘. Helmed by newbie Shankar Dayal, the film stars Karthi, Santhanam and Pranitha in the lead roles as Kamal, Rajini and Sridevi! Quite filmy, isn’t it?
Music is by GV Prakash Kumar. The film also stars veterans like Kota Srinivasa Rao, Radhika Sarathkumar and Roja in pivotal and quite surprising roles.
So how did you like this out and out family commercial entertainer? Whose performance did you best like? How’s the chemistry between Karthi and Pranitha? Do Karthi and Santhanam beat the comedy of Siruthai? How did you like Karthi‘s character that has him play mind games?
Did ‘Saguni‘ live up to your expectations? Are you game for a second watch?

Karthi is back with a bang. Finally arrives the movie after almost a long delay. Does the film worth its wait? Yes indeed, seems to be the answer. Directed by debutant Shankar Dayal, Saguni is a commercial cocktail with a difference. The hero here doesn’t let his muscles do all the talking. His brin plays all mind games and pushes his enemies in a corner and emerges the winner from tough situations.
More inspired by films like Dhool, Mudhalvan among others, Shankar Dayal has managed to come up with a political movie loaded with some humour. The presence of Karthi and Santhanam promises no dull moments as they have liven up the proceedings with unlimited fun and entertainment. Interestingly Santhanam ‘s character is named after Rajni while Karthi calls himself Kamal. They strike a nice combo make you laugh.
Pranitha plays the heroine, while cast includes seasoned campaigners like Prakashraj, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Nasser, Roja, Kiran and Radhika Sarath Kumar. Karthi and Santhanam provides unlimited fun in the first half. They seems to share a wonderful bonding between them as was evident in their earlier outing Siruthai.
One can certainly relate the role played by Karthi in Saguni to that of Lord Krishna’s in the great epic Mahabharatha. In the epic, Krishna played mind games and went hammer and tongs to ensure justice and success of pandavas over gauravas.
G V Prakash has scored the music while P G Muthiah has cranked the camera.Sreekar Prasad handled editing.
Kamal (Karthi) is an innocent youth who comes to Chennai to get the help of political leaders in a bid to save his home at Karaikudi. Eventually he comes across A corrupt chief minister (Prakash Raj), Wwho is the reason for all his troubles.
An annoyed Kamal decides that gaining political power is one way to save his property. Then he meets Rajini (Santhanam) and with his help, sets out to do what he aimed to. He comes across various men and ensure that they help him wage a successful battle against the CM.Is he able to ward off the villain’s designs and emerge unscathed is the crux.
Karthi is the flesh and blood of the movie. His stock is sure to rise after Saguni. As usual Santhanam’s one-liners are entertaining.
Pranitha is pretty and resembles Kajal Agarwal.Prakashraj plays a cliched Chief Minister but has a major role in the movie. The likes of Radhika Sarath Kumar and Nasser have played minuscule roles in the film. Andrea and Anushka play cameos.
G V Prakashkumar’s song Manasellam is nice to listen to. The cinematography by P G Muthiah is a treat for eyes. The major lacunae is the length. Also the cliches in the second half could have been avoided. Reminding one of Vikram starrer Dhool, Saguni has its own moments.
Verdict: More for the mind
Rating: 5/10 – Above Average

Saguni directed by Shankar Dayal is a thorough commercial entertainer.Recently Karthi along with director Shankar Dayal had been to a theatre in madurai to interact with his fans.
The questions asked by his fans:
Actress Anushka had acted with your brother Surya. Now you are acting with her in a film. What do you think about that?
Anushka is one of the best actresses. She is also a hard worker. There is fighting sequence in a running train in the film Alex Pandian in which we both are acting. We both have to run on the roof of the running train. She boldly acted in that very difficult scene without using a dupe. She is bold actress who can do any role. The secret of her success is her hard work.
Which actress do you like of all the actresses you have paired with?
I like all of them.
Later on Karthi spoke to the media. He said, “Saguni has become a great hit. In three days it has crossed the profits yielded by Siruthai. There is a wonderful comedy in this film. The director has narrated a political story in a comical way without political backdrop. He has told many new things in this film. None of the scene will hurt the feelings of anyone. When I was acting in Paruthiveeran, Madurai became very familiar to me. That film will be always remaining in my mind.. Actor Vikram after seeing my film had conveyed his compliments. After seeing this film, he said that I am in the lead of the next generation actors. A political story has been narrated in a comical way which can be seen by one and all. This is the success of this film.”
