Getting appreciation from others is very different from getting a pat on the shoulder from director Bala. The mercurial director, who won the national award for ‘best director’ for his Naan Kadavul, doesn’t watch many movies and it is widely believed that when he praises a film, it ought to be a good one.
Bala watched actor-director Sasikumar’s latest film Poraali a few days back. The film, which has Swathi (of Subramaniapuram fame) as Sasikumar’s heroine, has been directed by Sasikumar’s close friend and actor-director Samuthirakkani. Samuthirakkani & Sasikumar have remained close friends in an industry which bothers least about friendship except in films.
A protege of Bala, Sasikumar arranged a special screening for Bala and his own friends from the film fraternity. After watching the film, Bala said that the film had been made in an ‘excellent’ manner. In particular, he had words of appreciation about Sasikumar’s acting and added that the way Sasikumar had performed in the film was indeed a surprise for him.
Bala went on to say that “Sasikumar’s very casual and non-filmy portrayal of his role makes one forget whatever minor flaws which appear in the screenplay and the script. Especially, I was very impressed by the speed and anger displayed by Sasikumar in action sequences. After the film was over, I really felt that Tamil cinema has now got a new ‘action hero’ in the form of Sasikumar!”
Coming from Bala, one just can’t afford to ignore these comments!
