Bollywood actress Vidya Balan has showered praise on ‘Silk’ Smitha, Tamil cinema’s ‘eternal’ sex queen and ‘item girl’. Vidya is presently starring in The Dirrty Picture, a film on the life and times of the late actress made by Milan Luthria, by essaying the late ‘Silk’ Smitha’s role. The publicity stills and promotional vides of the upcoming film, leaked to the press so far, have evoked mixed responses so far.
Vidya did a lot of home work prior to start working in the film and went to the extent of even visiting Smitha’s ancestral village in Andhra Pradesh and meeting her friends and relatives to get an ‘insight’ about the actress’ lifestyle. Commenting on the role she is essaying, Vidya says “Many of us have viewed Smitha in a wrong manner. In fact, from what I have learnt about her, she had remained a courageous woman who never shied away from doing what she felt was the right thing.
“Though she appeared like a child in her outward behaviour, she had a mind of her own which was rather sharp,” says Vidya, whose sexy stills in the film have created a huge buzz about the film. Continuing, Vidya adds “In real life, Smitha was on a higher pedestal than many of her contemporaries who were playing heroine’s roles. People who have always seen her in sexy attires have a wrong and misconstrued notion about her personal life, which was rather unfortunate.
“In reality, though, Smitha was a child at heart but had the courage to do whatever she felt was right, notwithstanding others’ criticisms. She also had the knack of staying on top by making optimum use of all the film offers she got and believed in living life to the fullest without ever regretting. I think her basic strength was her immense courage. I’m happy to be playing her role in the film, which is a significant milestone in my career,” concludes Vidya.
