Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today launched a tirade against her predecessor M Karunanidhi, saying he had changed the Tamil New year to the first day of “Thai” for his self-publicity and proclaim that he was the sole custodian of Tamils.
Intevening the debate on the bill, seeking to annul the legislation, enacted by the previous DMK regime, changing the Tamil New year, she said the DMK leader had done this to create an illusion in the minds of the people that he was the sole custodian of Tamils and Tamil language.
The enactment of the legislation had only helped Mr Karunanidhi‘s sychopants to organise a function to felicitate and shower praise on him, she said. The law enacted by the previous DMK government was in no way beneficial to the people. On the other hand, it hurt the sentiments of the people, who had been celebrating the first day of Tamil month Chithirai as Tamil new year day for centuries, she said.
Based on the Sun‘s movement, Chithirai was judged as the first month of Tamil new year and the first day of the month has been celebrated as Tamil new year day for centuries, she said, adding the commencement of new year was also based on the rotation of seasons and nature.
