Producer ‘Kalaipuli’ S Dhanu has slammed Bollywood music director Ismail Durbar for his reported remarks about A.R Rahman. During a recent chat with newsmen, Durbar claimed that A.R Rahman manipulated his ‘twin-Oscar’ success a few years back and said that the music composer ‘might have paid money’ to achieve the feat of winning the Oscars for the country.
Ismai’s comments against A.R Rahman have drawn widespread criticism from within Bollywood circles and outside. On his part, the soft-spoken A.R Rahman has gone on record saying that he never felt the need to ‘stoop down’ to ‘pay and get’ awards and clarified that nobody can ‘bribe the entire jury’ to get awards. He dismissed the allegation as ‘false’ and ‘baseless’.
In the year 2009, A.R Rahman won the twin Oscars for his work in the film ‘Slumdog Millionnaire‘ directed by Danny Boyle. Ismail’s allegations have been met with stiff resistance from Kollywood as well. Dhanu, a leading producer, has said in a statement that A.R Rahman had mesmerized many with his music and his utterances in Tamil after receiving the Oscars would remain in the memory of all Tamil-speaking populations for a long, long time to come.
“When the whole world is in awe of A.R Rahmans potential, Ismail doesn’t have any qualifications whatsoever in negatively criticizing A.R Rahman and his work. I think he is doing it merely for gaining some ‘cheap publicity’ and as such, we have to ignore such comments. Bribing the Oscar Jury comprising so many members can be possible only in Ismail’s widest of dreams,” the statement concluded.
