The name Prabhakaran has always been close to many Tamils, living in India as well as abroad. The name immediately reminds one of the slain LTTE chief, who was also instrumental in the assassination of one of our most loved former prime ministers, Rajiv Gadhi. The ‘magic’ associated with the name ‘Prabhakaran’, for some reasons, still refuses to die down in Tamil Nadu.
Decades back, Vijaykanth named his 100th film as ‘Captain Prabhakaran’ though the film didn’t deal with the problems of the ethnic Tamils. Now, Prabhu Deva has named his upcoming Vishal-Sameera Reddy starrer as ‘Prabhakaran’, almost opening up a Pandora’s Box.
The film, again, would have nothing to with the life and times of Prabhakaran, as it’s a Tamil remake of the Telugu hit film ‘Souryam’ which starred Gopichand in the lead. The film’s shooting has almost been completed with the climax and some other sequences remaining to be shot, it is learnt.
Just in case he encounters problems from the so-called patrons of Tamil culture and supporters of ethnic Tamils in Sri Lanka, Prabhu Deva is said to have a ‘Plan B’ option ready: should protests arise, he would prune down the title and rename the film simply as ‘Prabha’!
