Dhanush had his ‘Mappillai’ releasing yesterday amid high expectations from his ever-growing number of fans who erected huge banners and cut-outs of the actor outside all the cinema halls screening the picture. The film releases in the middle of a ‘purple patch’ for actor Dhanush, who has had his last four films successively succeeding at the box-office.
The film, a remake of the Rajnikanth-hit of the late eighties, has newcomer Hansika Motwani opposite Dhanush and has been directed by Siraaj, who earlier made ‘Padikkadhavan’ with the actor more than two years back. Those who have seen the ‘preview shows’ ofthe film, however, are skeptical about the film’s success at the box-office.
That nobody can match the stature and screen-presence of superstar Rajnikanth is a foregone conclusion. Yet, critics feel content-wise and performance-wise, the Dhanush-starrer is less than half of what Rajni’s film had to offer. Critics are especially aghast at Dhanush’s ‘punch dialogues’ and his gravity-defying action sequences.
The remix of the songs of Rajnikanth’s films have also not gone down well with the critics. Dhanush has begged not to compare himself with a ‘legend’ like Rajni and has said that he has performed according to his capabilities and his own limitations and hoped thatthe film would succeed at the box-office.
