Tamil films have always been held in high esteem for the novel screenplays, the presentation by various film-makers and above all the performances by the lead actors. In fact, Tamil film industry is considered to be the most innovative among all the film industries in the country for the range of films it churns out.
Of late, though, more sleaze appears to be occupying the minds of makers of Tamil films as they have obviously been training their concentration in making films of cheap virtue. A casual look at the vernacular newspapers carrying column-wise Tamil cinema advertisements is enough to get a hint of the shocking number of obscene and B-rated porn films being made in Tamil!
In between, Kollywood churns out amazing films like ‘Naan Kadavul’, ‘Kalavani’, ‘Nadodigal’, ‘Pasanga’ and ‘Veyil’, to name a few. Instead of finding stories which would search the souls of the viewers, the producers of late have apparently taken to producing films which tap the ‘ugly side’ of the viewers’ minds. Increasing number of films are being made with a high dose of sex, violence and obscenity to draw the viewers to the theatres!
A recent example in this regard is the promos of the film ‘Ilakkanapizhai’ which depicts its heroine in various ‘revealing’ poses. The film’s promotional photos belie whatever noble intention the film-maker might have had in making the film with a literary title! Another film in this genre is ‘Devaleelai’, where the heroine is depicted, again, in various revealing poses. ‘Andharangam’ too falls into this category.
Many more such films are said to be under various stages of production with a captivating title and attractive ‘stills’. This makes us wonder as to in which direction Tamil films are proceeding! Too much of anything won’t be of use to anyone!
