Public memory is too short, goes a saying. One can’t help wondering whether the public actually remember that there is an actor named Prashanth who has delivered many hit films in the past with leading heroines. For the memory-deficient, Prashanth debuted in the early nineties as hero and has acted against all the top heroines including Namitha and Pooja of the latest genre of actresses.
In an apparent effort to resurrect his son’s career, his father and director-actor Thiyagarajan has been making not one but two films with Prashanth in the lead. One of them is the period drama ‘Ponnar Shankar’, based on a novel of the same title penned by Kalaignar, in which Prashanth would be playing dual roles. Kalaignar would also be writing the story and dialogues of the film.
Thiyagarajan is also attempting the remake of his own hit of the mid-eighties, “Malaiyur Mambattiyan”, which was a runaway hit and which narrated the story of a dacoit-turned-Robinhood. The latest version of the film stars Prashanth and Meera Jasmine in lead roles, the roles played by Thiyagarajan and Saritha in the original version. This time around, the movie is being shot in Tamil and Telugu simultaneously.
Mumaith Khan and Mallika Sherawat play the vamps, played in the original version by Jayamaalini and the late ‘Silk’ Smitha respectively. Prakashraj steps into the shoes of the late Jaishankar by playing the cop who hunts the bandit while Vadivelu, Riyaz Khan and Kota Srinivasa rao play important roles in the film.
Produced at a huge cost, Thiyagarajan is taking care to ensure that the film is aided by the latest technological developments and would act as a huge ‘impetus’ to his son’s sagging career!
