Wednesday was yet another winning day for Tamil music, as maestro Illayaraja was honored with Padma Bhushan by President Pratibha Patil at a glittering ceremony in New Delhi.
It was only on March 31 the first citizen of India conferred a Padma award on Oscar-Grammy winner A R Rahman. And seven days later, Tamil film music got another recognition thanks to the ‘Isaignani’.
The Padma Bhushan was presented to Illayaraja in the presence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Vice-President Hamid Ansari and other dignitaries at the Ashoka Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Noted mridangam exponent Umayalpuram K Sivaraman, former Reserve Bank of India Governor Y V Reddy and nonagenarian artiste Zohra Segal were honored with the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second highest civilian awards.
The evergreen beauty of Indian cinema Rekha was awarded the Padma Shri for her contribution to the film industry. Oscar winning sound engineer Resul Pookutty received Padma Shri for his contribution to sound mixing in the film industry and abroad.
