Important festival. From day 7 to 18 – 12 days – in the month of Chithirai (April-May) the rays of Sun fall on the presiding deity and these days are observed as festive days. There will be car festival for 9 days called Sowramahotsavam. 4 time puja is devotionally followed in the temple each day.

Reputation:
Mother Parvathi left for her father’s Yagna against the wish of Lord Shiva. The Lord refused to take Parvathi back as she left for her father’s house against his wish. Lord Muruga, in the guise of Lord Shiva appeared before the Mother and preached her Dharma. Hence the Muruga in the temple is seen with an Akshamala in hand.
Lord Shiva appears here as Veerabadra.
Rathi got back her husband Manmatha (cupid) in this soil only.
The Linga stage (Audayar) is in a round shape here while generally it is oval in other temples. The Avudayr has 16 petals bearing Lord Shiva as a Swayambu Linga.

The place derived the name Lakshmipuri as Goddess Lakshmi got Lord Vishnu as her husband by worshipping Shiva in the temple.
King of the Devas got the weapon Vajrayutha from Lord Shiva in this temple for killing the demon Vruddhasura.
The name Kandapuri came to the place as Lord Muruga (Skanda) killed the demon Tharuka by worshipping the Lord of the temple.

Semponar Koil is situated at 8 kms from Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam district on the Tharangambadi road. Accomadation facilities are available in Mayiladuthurai. Town bus facilities are available from Mayiladuthurai which is also the nearest railway station. The nearest airports are Trichy and Chennai.
History:
Daksha, son of Lord Brahamma gave his daughter Dakshayani to Lord Shiva in marriage. When he performed a Yagna, due to pride, he did not invite Lord Shiva to the function. While Dakshayani went to Thiruparialur to correct Her father’s mistake, Daksha simply humiliated her and her husband Lord Shiva.
Irate Dakshayani cursed that the Yaga of Daksha be spoiled and appealed to Lord Shiva to destroy it. Lord Shiva created Badrakali and Veerabadra to destroy the Daksha’s Yaga. Dakshayani, to avoid the disgrace of being the daughter of Daksha performed a severe penance in the midst of Panchakni (five fires). Lord Shiva pardoned his consort for leaving for the Dakshayagna without his consent and asked her to be with him to rule the worlds.
