Due to the intense penance undertaken by Kadamba Maharishi, demons and wild animals could not enter this place and thus it was a place of total peace and happiness. As the environment was so conducive for productive discussions, the three Lords, Shiva, Vishnu and Brahmma often met here. Hence the name Koshtiyur meaning Meeting Place. The place came into being during the Varahavadhara period of Lord Vishnu.
It is in this place the three Lords planned the destruction of Hiranyasura in Ahobil Mutt. The place is sung by Parasarapatta. The first 5 songs in Nalayira Divya Prabandham have mention of this temple and this is also revered as the first of the 108 divyadesas.
Thirukoshtiyur is the holy place from where Sri Ramanuja preached the Ashtakshara Maha Mantra Om Namo Narayanana to humanity.
