Top South Indian Cinema's Superstars

In South India, the screen is believed (at least by some) to be a place where divine manifestations happen. The theatre becomes a sanctum sanctorum, fans become devotees and actors become gods; Cinema is a religion and stars are Avatars, to be adored and worshipped.

Here is a list of South India's mightiest superstars. Who would you choose to be the Superstar of the Decade? Vote Now!

Rajnikanth

Phenomenally popular, Rajnikanth is known among his fans as "The Superstar". For thousands of his admirers, Rajni is the last word in stardom. He has enchanted film viewers with his magical performances, thrilling on-screen presence and unique dialogue delivery. Rajni has, so far, had only three major releases in this decade ('Baba', 'Chandramukhi'and 'Sivaji The Boss'), out of which two were record-breaking hits.

In spite of the debacles of 'Baba' and 'Kuselan' (guest role), Rajni has remained the mightiest star in terms of B.O pull. While 'Chandramukhi' rewrote all previous Box-office records, 'Sivaji The Boss' opened to unmatched frenzy and fanfare.

Rajnikanth proved that he is India's biggest crowd-puller with 'Endhiran' (2010).

Kamal Hassan

Whether it is the runaway comic caper, 'Thenali', or the thoughtful remake, 'Unnaipol Oruvan', Kamal Hassan has made crowds sit up and take notice, every time he appeared on screen.

In this decade, Kamal won accolades for his experimental film 'Dasavataram', in which he played ten roles. The film was a hit, and the performance fetched mixed reviews. He, however, got favourable reviews for his portrayals in 'Anbe Sivam' and 'Virumandi'.

Another popular Kamal film of the decade was 'Vasool Raja MBBS' (the remake of Raj Kumar Hirani's 'Munnabhai MBBS'). One of the biggest stars of Tamil cinema, Kamal Haasan continues to stun his detractors and enthrall his fans.

Vikram

Chiyaan Vikram's 'Anniyan' is one of Tamil cinema's biggest blockbusters to date. His impressive performance as a person with multiple personality disorder won him both B.O. success and critical acclaim.

Vikram also gave powerful performances in super hit films such as 'Sethu' and 'Pithamaghan'.

His latest offering 'Kanthasamy' was declared a hit but could not match the success of his previous ventures.

Ajith

Despite many ups and downs, Ajith has remained steadfast and managed to give hits at the right time. Even when his films haven't done well, critics and fans have appreciated his performances, which has made him stay on top.

Hits such as 'Dheena', 'Citizen', 'Poovellam Un Vasam', 'Villain', 'Attagasam', 'Paramasivan', 'Valaralu', and 'Billa', testify to Ajith's ability to play characters of various hues.

In spite of an erratic career graph, Ajith has retained his popularity.

Vijay

Vijay has remained the quintessential 'young man' of Kollywood, enacting youthful roles with ease and elan. His dance and action sequences are worthy of applause!

Hits such as 'Ghilli', 'Puthiya Geethai', 'Madhurey', 'Sivakasi' and 'Kuruvi' made him a favorite among the youth.

Vijay's popularity and box office success took a slight dent with the debacles of films such as 'Aadhi', 'Sachien', 'Villu' and 'Kuruvi'.

Surya

No other actor from Kollywood has amassed so much popularity in so little time as Suriya has.

Suriya's most popular hits of the decade include 'Nandha', 'Mounam Pesiyadhe', 'Kaaka Kaaka', 'Ghajini', 'Aaru', 'Varanam Aayiram', 'Ayan' and 'Aadhavan'.

Suriya will begin his Bollywood innings with Ram Gopal Varma's 'Rakht Charitra - 2'

Chiranjeevi

Chiru's career graph for this decade resembles an ECG print out. While crowds rejoiced at some of his super hits, the fan following did take a beating with a few duds that he dished out during 2006-09.

Films such as 'Indra', 'Tagore', 'Shankardada MBBS' and 'Shankardada Zindabad' drew huge collections at the box office and won him a lot of regional awards.

'Andarivadu', 'Jai Chiranjeeva' and 'Stalin' opened to mass frenzy but weren't able to sustain viewer interest.

Nagarjuna

Nag's presence on the silver-screen has worked wonders sometimes and has caught dust on other occasions.

His most popular hits of the decade include 'Nuvvasthavani', 'Santosham', 'Manmadhudu' and 'Sriramadasu'.

'Nenunnanu', 'Azaad', 'Sivamani', 'Krishnarjuna' and 'King' were just average grossers, but Nag's performances in these movies were greatly appreciated.

Balakrishna

Apart from the blockbuster, 'Narsimha Naidu' (in the beginning of this decade), none of Balakrishna's releases were able to create the magic this star is supposed to be capable of.

'Seema Simham', 'Chenna Kesava Reddy', 'Palnati Brahmanaidu', 'Lakshmi Narsimha', and 'Vijayendra Verma' were average successes.

Ballayya's revived his fortunes with 'Pandurangadu' and 'Oka Mogadu'.

Mahesh Babu

This young and talented actor has created quite a standing for himself in the Telugu film industry with well-placed releases, in this decade.

Kicking-off the decade with the super hit movie, 'Murari', Mahesh repeated his success with major hits such as 'Okkadu', 'Athadu', and 'Pokiri'.

Though Mahesh's charm worked wonders with fans in 'Takkari Donga', 'Nijam', 'Naani', 'Sainikudu', and 'Athidhi', the films did just average business at the B.O.

Junior NTR

Jr. NTR's rise in Tollywood has been phenomenal by all standards; he now commands a fan following at par with any of the big names of the industry.

NTR's first major B.O success of the decade was 'Student No. 1' (2001). He followed it up with another mega hit 'Aadi'.

NTR's other major hits of the decade include 'Simhadri' and 'Yamadonga'.

Vishnuvardhan

Sampath Kumar aka Vishnuvardhan had been a very influential star in the Kannada film fraternity. His superstar stature, charisma and undying appeal had kept audiences coming back to watch his movies regardless of the film's overall USP.

VV's biggest hits of the last ten years were 'Simhadriya Simha', 'Kadamba', 'Apthamitra', 'Kshana Kshana', and 'Maathaad Maathaadu Mallige'. His posthumous releases, 'School Master' and 'Aptharakshaka', hit the bull's-eye at the Kannada B.O.

Puneet Rajkumar

Puneeth Rajkumar has so far had a dream run in this part of South Indian cinema. Since his magical debut in 2002 in the blockbuster 'Appu', there has been no looking back for this Rajkumar scion.

Crowds loved his performances in 'Appu', 'Abhi', 'Maurya', 'Aakash', 'Arasu', 'Milana' and 'Vamshi'.

Ganesh

A classic case of an over-night hero, Ganesh has made a mark for himself in Kannada films post the release of the super hit, 'Mangaru Malle'.

His good run at the box-office continued with hits such as 'Huddugatta', 'Chelivina Chittara', 'Gaalipata', 'Aramane' and the recent 'Maleyali Jotheyali'.

Mammootty

One of Malayalam cinema's most popular faces, Mammootty's has remained a super star for most part of his career.

Mammootty's super hits for this decade include ' Kazhcha', 'Thommanum Makkalum', 'Rajamanikyam' and 'Pazhassi Raja'.

Mohanlal

His is an illustrious movie career of over three decades, spread over acting, producing and distributing. Mohanlal is now a mighty force in Mollywood.

His hits from this decade include 'Narasimham', 'Thanmatra', 'Udayananu Tharam', 'Rasathanthram' and 'Keerthichakra'.
