Introduction:
Travel and Tourism industry is the world’s leading foreign exchange grosser. While millions are directly employed in this industry, scores of others are associated with ancillary industries that thrive on tourism.
Generally, this industry is all about providing services to tourists who are on a trip to a new place either due to business or holiday. Travel companies provide services such as obtaining tickets, passports and visas and organize trips.
Eligibility:
There are various courses on offer, ranging from certificate to post graduation, if one wishes to pursue a career in travel and tourism. Aspirants willing to pursue a Bachelors degree in travel and tourism must have completed 10+2. It is also preferable to be proficient in any one of the foreign languages.
The two-year Masters of Tourism Administration (MTA) is approved by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. The Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management (IITTM) and a few other universities also offer MTA.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) offers certification courses in travel, tourism and cargo industry, which are very popular and recognized world over. Other than this, several large travel and tour operators also offer short-term training and provide the candidates with employment.
Apart from educational qualifications, those aspiring for a career in this field must have exceptional communication skills, be an extrovert, linguistic capabilities, a good decision-maker, organizing ability and be a team player.
Jobs and careers:
Both public as well as private sector provide ample opportunities to travel and tourism professionals. In the government Directorate of Tourism, the job opportunities are: Reservation and counter staff, sales and marketing, tour planners and guides, officers, etc. In the airlines one can opt for a career as ground or in-flight staff.
In the private sector one can be placed with a good travel agency, tour operator, hotel, transport companies, etc. If you have a penchant for planning vacations or business trips to new places for other people then you can opt for career in a travel agency and eventually own your business. Those with post graduate degree and an inclination to teach can opt for a career in teaching.
