Psychology, the science of mind, is the study of mental processes and behavior. Mainly concerned with the working of the mind, psychologists study the motives, reactions, feelings of the human mind. They do not prescribe medicines to the patients but change their behavioral pattern through counseling.
To pursue a course in psychology it is not necessary to obtain a degree in medicine. Aspirants can opt for one the numerous specializations available in this field, such as child psychology, clinical psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology and educational psychology.
Eligibility:
Eligibility to join a Bachelors programme, which is of three-year duration, is 10+2 with psychology as a subject preferably. For admission to post graduate courses (two years) eligibility is Bachelors degree in psychology. Students opting for doctoral studies must have completed post graduation in psychology.
This subject is offered at the higher secondary level along with other subjects. Most universities offer Psychology at the graduate level, which is either as a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.). At the post graduate level candidates can specialize in any one of the numerous psychology subjects. For the research and the teaching inclined there are M.Phil and Ph.D courses.
However, psychology as a subject at the graduate level is a must to enroll for post graduation in that subject. There are several allied psychology subjects available, which are short-term diploma courses.
Some of the attributes that psychologist should possess are: excellent communication skills, empathy and sympathy, ability to relate to the patients’ problems, sensitive and caring nature.

Jobs and careers:
Psychologists can find employment in universities and colleges as teaching faculty, industries to analyze the problems of the workers, rehabilitation centers, hospitals, clinics, prison, NGOs, community health centers, social service organizations and government sector, etc. As there are many specializations in this field the nature of the job will depend on it.
