Technical writing is a form of communication that helps communicate complicated technical details to the common man in simple language. With globalization and liberalization ruling the roost, due to which there are great technological advancements, technical writing is gaining importance with each passing day.

Technical writers write project reports, manuals, instruction and installation guides, brochures, online help files, Web sites, etc. Apart from good language skills, it is also necessary that a technical writer must have specialized knowledge of the product he/she is associated with as well as keen interest in technological advancements.


The minimum qualification for those aspiring for a career in technical writing is graduation in, English, science, information technology and journalism and mass communication. However, many companies do prefer a post graduate degree. Besides this, many institutes and foreign universities also offer online, certificate and diploma courses in technical writing. These courses teach writing, editing and proofreading apart from software such as PageMaker, CorelDraw, Microsoft word, Frame Maker, Rob help, Front page etc.

Those having a penchant for creative writing, ability to understand technical terms, and good language and research skills, can make it a long-term career. Accuracy in technical writing is vital. If a product is described incorrectly, then readers may act adversely.

Jobs and careers:

Career opportunities are aplenty in advertising agencies, software companies, industrial houses, newspapers, publishing houses, etc. There are many freelance opportunities also available where one can opt to work from the comfort of their home.

Job responsibilities in companies include translating and converting highly technical documents into simple language. Newspapers employ the services of a technical writer to write articles on science and technology.
