The diagnostic backbone of the medical field
Introduction:
Medical Laboratory Technology is concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease with the help of clinical laboratory tests. The two levels of medical laboratory workers are: technicians and technologists. A lab technologist analyzes the body fluids, tissues, blood type, cell counts micro-organisms, etc., and find out the existence, non-existence or degree of disease and provide the necessary data to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment. Lab technicians conduct regular lab testing as per the instructions provided by the technologists or supervisors. Their job responsibilities include preparing specimens, operating machines, maintaining and cleaning the lab equipments etc.

Eligibility:
Aspirants willing to pursue the three-year course on Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology (BMLT) course must have completed 10+2 with science as core subjects or a vocational course with laboratory technology as a subject. Eligibility to join a diploma course in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) is 10+2 with science as core subjects. The duration of this course is two years. Apart from this, there are certificate courses offered by various universities, hospitals and institutions.

Jobs and careers:
Lab technicians can find employment in hospitals, private laboratories, blood banks and clinics. Some of the job responsibilities of lab technologists include taking samples of stools, urine and blood, make slides, etc., drug testing, therapeutic drug monitoring and biogenetics Lab technologists with rich experience can be promoted to management positions in hospitals and labs. Other opportunities are: laboratory manager, consultant, supervisor, administrator, coordinator, Analyst/Consultant, director, health and safety officer etc.
A lab technologist’s service is also required at molecular biotechnology companies, molecular diagnostics centers and in vitro fertilization laboratories Medical technologists’ can opt for ca career in marketing and sales, product development, quality assurance and insurance, etc.
