Introduction:

Medicine is one of the oldest professions world over. It is also the most sought-after and lucrative career. With constant development in this field, there are numerous specializations available nowadays. Eligibility:

All practitioners of medicine must have completed 5½-year Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) course followed by one-year internship. Eligibility to seek admission to this course is 10+2 with physics, chemistry, botany and zoology as core subjects. The syllabus includes subjects such as anatomy, biochemistry, gynecology and obstetrics, physiology, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, forensic medicine, general medicine, surgery, ophthalmology, pediatrics, orthopedics and preventive and social medicine.

Those with MBBS degree can opt either for Master of Medicine (MD) or Master of Surgery (MS). Post graduate courses offer various specializations and are of three years duration. Aspirants inclined towards research and teaching can also opt for doctorate and post doctoral studies.

Apart from the educational qualifications, those seeking a career in medicine must have strong orientation to serve the needy, patience, punctuality, stamina, decision-making capacity, memory power, etc.

Doctors can find employment in various government and private hospitals, nursing homes, armed forces, polyclinics, charitable institutions, medical colleges, research institutes, industries. Those preferring self-employment can set-up their own practice.
