Introduction:
Mechanical engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with design, construction, installation, operation, and maintenance of machines tools and equipment used in industries. Being on of the broadest engineering disciplines, this subject has many inter-disciplinary inter-dependent specialties. A mechanical engineer’s work area is primarily industries and manufacturing firms.
Eligibility:
Aspirant seeking admission to Bachelors of Engineering/Technology courses in mechanical engineering must have completed 10+2 with physics, chemistry and mathematics as core subjects. On completion of bachelors degrees students can opt for more specialized branches such as thermal engineering, production engineering, mechatronics, etc. Bachelors’ courses are of four-year duration and masters’ courses are of two years.
Students also have the option to seek admission to three-year diploma course in mechanical engineering after completion of 10th class and then enroll for second year graduate course. Mechanical engineers must be good at Maths, drafting and computers.
Jobs and careers:
With the liberalization policy adopted by the government and globalization, the job opportunities for mechanical engineers have grown manifold. There are numerous jobs on offer for mechanical engineers in private and public sectors. Applied mechanics, automotive design, energy systems, manufacturing, materials, plant engineering and maintenance, refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, etc are some of the career options open for mechanical engineers wanting to special in a particular area.
Job opportunities exist in armed forces and in industries such as automobile, chemical, electronics, steel plants, oil exploration and refining, space research organization, etc. Other industries that need the services of mechanical engineers are agriculture, aeronautical, chemical, power plants, railways etc.
One can be placed in the administrative and managerial capacity on completion of management course from reputed institutions. Those with sound technical knowledge and good communication skills can opt for a career in sales or marketing.
Those with a strong inclination to research could opt for doctoral studies. Teaching in institutes, universities and colleges is another option open to mechanical engineers.
