What is fashion designing all about?
An integral part of the world of fashion, designing has emerged as the most sought-after career today. Fashion designing includes designing clothes, accessories, and almost everything associated with it. A fashion designer, apart from designing the clothes, must be able to choose the right material, color combination and proper cutting techniques.
Eligibility:
Aspirant must have completed 10+2 to pursue a degree in fashion designing. The duration of the degree courses vary from 3–4 years depending on the institution. Several institutes also offer certificate and diploma courses, which are of shorter duration. Graduates are eligible to enroll for post-graduate courses. Generally, most of the institutes conduct an entrance exam and select students.
Other than equipping oneself with the requisite qualifications, a fashion designer must be highly creative, have thorough knowledge about color combinations and fabrics, should be a good merchandiser, a neat tailor and a team player.
Jobs and careers:
With the media industry growing leaps and bounds, the role of a fashion designer has only increased manifold. Job opportunities exist in advertisement agencies, boutiques, television, production houses, export houses and garment manufacturing organizations. Fashion designers can specialize in various branches such as designing apparels, knitwear, accessories, etc. Many highly skilled designers are hired by film artistes and models to design their wardrobe. Fashion designers can also opt to start their own business.
