Engineering means to find economical solution for technological problems. In today’s scenario it plays a very important role. Engineers work on scientific theories to get practical solutions. Their work starts from planning, designing, construction, production, testing, implementation and maintenance. The work of the engineer is prevalent in many fields such as industries, technology and business. A trained Engineer finds solutions to the complex problems facing our nation.
Today there is a great demand for engineers in all the industries. Engineering offers tremendous scope for employment depending upon the area of specialization.
Defense services hire them as commissioned officers. The Civil Aviation Industry and Merchant Navy too have great openings for them. Other opportunities consist of working as a Consultant in research / scientific organizations. Engineers with Post Graduate degree get senior position in private and government department or as a planner or advisor on basic infrastructure development of the industry. An engineer with entrepreneurship abilities can also set up his/her own enterprise. There is a great demand for them in the software industry too.

Eligibility:
The basic eligibility criteria for a BE / B.Tech is 10+2 or equivalent examination, with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and must have a fairly high percentage of marks in the aggregate. One must also pass the qualifying exam JEE (Joint Entrance Exam) conducted by the IIT’s.
There is also the Associate Membership Examination of the Institute of Engineers (AMIE), which enables working people in the private and public sector, or diploma holders to acquire a Bachelor’s engineering degree through distance education by studying the syllabus and appearing for the Associate membership examination of the Institute of Engineers (AMIE) conducted by ASI (‘The Aeronautical Society of India’). This degree is equivalent to aeronautical engineering degree. Those with a degree in electronics, mathematics or physics can also find opportunities in this area.
Remuneration:
Engineers in government organizations, are paid official scales while those in the private sector are paid according to the scales decided by The management of the company. The approximate starting salaries in the government /public sectors are Rs. 8,000 to Rs.10, 000 (excluding other allowances). In the private sector, the scales are decided by the management of the company and are approximately Rs.8, 000 to Rs.15, 000 per month plus perks. Engineering graduates with management degrees get a starting salary of Rs.10, 000 to Rs.40, 000 per month plus perks.
Institutes:
IT’s or Indian institute of Technology in New Delhi, Mumbai, Guwahati, Kanpur, and Kharagpur are the most prestigious Engineering institutions in India. Other main Engineering colleges include Birla Institute of Technology (BITS) – (Pilani and Ranchi.), Delhi College of Engineering, and Delhi. University of Roorkee, Roorkee, Uttar Pradesh etc and the various Regional engineering colleges in different states.
