Naanum Rowdydhaan Movie Review

Direction: Vignesh Shivan
Production: Wunderbar Films
Starring: Vijay Sethupathi, Nayantara
Music: Anirudh Ravichander
Cinematography : George C. Williams
Editing: A. Sreekar Prasad

How often have we seen a film with simple tale yet convincingly told in an entertaining manner. In fact, it’s such a difficult task to narrate a film, where the entire story is revealed through the trailer alone. When you see Naanum Rowdy Dhaan trailer, you could have thought that you knew everything about the film, but you get surprised with an engaging narration.

Vijay Sethupathi plays Pondy (a) Pandi who is a pampered son of a police officer (Radhika Sarathkumar). She wants her son to be a cop, but his funny aspirations are to become a rowdy as the famous quote of Vadivelu says ‘Naanum Rowdy Dhaan’. He has his bunch of pals who keep shooting the breeze all the time and it includes RJ Balaji as well. He comes across a beautiful good looking Kadambari (Nayantara) who has hearing impairment and gradually in falls in love with her. But when her father is killed by a dreaded goon (Parthiepan), she leaves Pandi with two choices – Kill him and get into relationship or else part ways. Rest is a tale of humour, emotions and some funny surprises in climax.

As cited above, it’s really a difficult task to narrate a story that has thin line and yet convincingly tell them to the audiences. In this likelihood, Vignesh Shivan has done a neat job of working on a perfect script, where there aren’t any unwanted tracks. The knack of handling even some ‘Adult’ contents like ‘Podanum’ in a hilarious manner is something a speculative task, which comes very well with output. On the other hand, cinematography by George C Williams and Anirudh’s musical narration are the best assets to this film. It’s always a blessing to have Sreekar Prasad’s editing. Be it first or second half, the entire film is so much engaging very well balanced. It’s actually an emotional drama of vengeance, but the way it is told with hilarious elements is an international style of Rom-Com or Black Comedy.

Vijay Sethupathi is back in form. For the ones who desperately wanted him to repeat the magic of Soodhu Kavvum, Idharkuthaane Aasai Pattai Balakumara et al, he is here again to keep you involved in the laughter riot. His body language, mannerisms and dialogue deliveries are his greatest assets and with these aspects, he keeps us entertained.

Nayantara leaves us speechless! Her performance is incredible and she is going to hold a new status as ‘Lady Superstar’. She is deliberately rendering the best performances in any roles she essays and this one is marvelous. Parthiepan as baddie doesn’t just keep you scared, but leaves you in splits with unlimited laughter. RJ Balaji as usual with his witty lines encompasses humour. Others in the cast including Radhika Sarathkumar, Mansoor Ali Khan and others give the best performances.

What works?
  • Star-cast and brilliant performance
  • Cinematography and songs
  • Screenplay
What doesn’t work?
  • Logics slightly missing at places
  • Nothing much to point out

Being a romantic comedy, the film has many reasons to be attractive and Vignesh Shivan much alike ‘Poda Podi’ delivers an entertaining film. This is sure to become a favourite movie for all youngsters and even family audiences.

Verdict: Romance, Comedy and irresistible entertainment
