Depression leads to Suicide for Nithyashree’s Husband

Singer Nithyashree‘s husband’s jump to death has been a shock to all in the industry and the singer’s response to queries was that he was grieving his mother’s death and could not handle the pain any longer.

The police inquired further about this with Mahadevan‘s car driver Suresh and found that her statement was indeed true and that he had been suffering from depression for the past 5 years and had been receiving treatment for it from Apollo in Chennai too.

Mahadevan‘s personal driver Suresh stated that the deceased had indeed been acting weird for the past few years and on the day of the tragedy he had visited his daughters at the tennis courts and then driven the car himself while Suresh was seated on the side. He had stopped the car on the Kotturpuram Bridge and Suresh thought it was for the usual reason of nature calling, but Mahadevan jumped off the bridge into the river with the car keys still inside his pocket. The driver had then called Nithyashree and the police as soon as possible.

Following this statement and other facts the police have concluded that Mahadevan‘s suicide was indeed due to depression.

In the cut-throat competitive and huge-earning world of Kollywood, suicides are not unusual. At least 10 heroines have committed suicide in the past few decades: some of the more popular ones include Lakshmishree (1979) , Phatafat Jayalakshmi (1980), Shoba (1980), Kannada actress Kalpana (1980), Silk Smitha (1996) , Viji (2000), Prathyusha (2002), Monal (2002) , Mayoori (2005), Shobana (2011) and the list goes on.

Why is this suicide phenomenon common among stars despite their name and fame (may be ephemeral), big money and adulation of fans? Is ending their lives the only solution they can think of for their problems? Anything from their struggle, depression, failed career, love failures, insecurity lead them to take extreme measures say industry pundits.

The latest victim is young and vivacious Jiah Khan who had worked with A.R.Murugadoss in the Hindi remake of Ghajini. We take you a trip down memory lane of this fatal streak among the K’town actresses.

Lakshmishree, the young and upcoming actress who made a mark in Rajinikanth’s Dharmayuddham hanged herself in the bedroom while her producer lover was said to be present there when the sad incident happened. The issue was hushed up and after inquiry she was said to have committed suicide.

Then in line is bubbly Jayalakshmi who made her screen debut with ace filmmaker K.Balachander’s Aval Oru Thodarkadhai and got the sobriquet ‘Phatafat’, a word which she used often in the film. She was steadily climbing up the success ladder acting with the likes of Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan and Chiranjeevi. Her alleged affair with a nephew of a then big politician and subsequent rejection drove her to take extreme step. She consumed excessive sleeping pills and slipped into coma for a few days and died later.

It was ‘Oorvasi’ Shoba’s death under mysterious circumstances came as a rude shock to many. The girl started as a child artiste and set a trend in Tamil cinema for her realistic portrayals and won a national award for Pasi was in her peak when she was found hanging at her house at the age of 17. Police closed the file as the case of suicide. Rumours alleged an affair with a much senior and married director resulting in her giving up her life so early. It remained a topic of controversy and gossiping even after death.

Kalpana was a top actress in Kannada and has acted in few Tamil films as well. Known for her female centric films, Kalpana won several state and national awards for her intense performances. She committed suicide by swallowing a diamond from her ring after her alleged failed romance.

Years later sex siren Silk Smitha’s untimely death gave a jolt and took the entire South Indian film fraternity and film lovers to deep shock and pain. The dusky and fat looking Vijayalakshmi from Andhra who started with B grade films in Malayalam became an ‘item bomb’ with her curvy and svelte hot body. Anything she utters made headlines and she was the pinup girl of every man in late 70s and 80s. She was a sought after gal and had acted in more than 450 films in all south languages. She was found hanging at her Kodambakkam residence and her living in relationship with a married man and family problems was all that was said about her death. Can you imagine a bold and optimistic girl losing faith in life?

Next came Viji who problems began after a messed up knee surgery that almost left her paralyzed. The leggy lass who started her career with a super hit film Kozhi Koovudhu carved a niche in almost all south languages. After a corrective surgery, Viji came out of her woes and when things started looking up, she took her life after the rejection from her lover who was already a married man.

Prathyusha from Andhra was an upcoming actress acting alongside of biggies like Vijayakanth, Sathyaraj. The actress was found dead inside a car parked in front of a hotel in Hyderabad. Her lover was also was inside the car in an unconscious state. She had allegedly consumed poison as parents were said to oppose her love affair. While she died, her boy friend survived.

It was 21 year old Monal’s death which shook the entire industry. The step sister of the then top actress Simran, Monal forayed into films with Badri where she was paired opposite superstar Vijay. Her breaking off with her choreographer boy friend drove her to commit suicide by hanging herself in her residence in Chennai.

Mayoori aka Shalini was a popular actress in Kannada, Malayalam and Tamil committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling fan of a room of her house in Chennai when she was hardly 22. She left a note saying, ‘I lost faith in life’. Sources alleged that it could be a love failure that made her take such drastic step.

Shobana, who portrayed hilarious roles in many films and television serials, committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling at her Kotturpuram residence in Chennai. It was said that Shobana was suffering of depression from a failed relationship and also her career was dwindling due to health problems.

Psychiatrists say that it is in a temporary fit of insanity that one commits suicide. “Some of these girls who resort to extreme measures may be victims of mental and physical abuse. They are in constant pressure don’t have enough mental courage to face the problems and get out of it”, opines psychiatrist Dr Raju.

Some say that it is parental pressure especially dominating mother which drives these girls to suicide. Veteran Film historian and a former publicist Film News Anandhan agrees with the view. “It is plain greed. The lifespan of a heroine is short. That is the reason why parents exploit their daughters to make as much money as possible while the going is good. Some of their mothers turn out to be failed actresses. So, now they try to re-live their dreams through their daughter. And most importantly, they never approve of their daughters’ love affairs fearing she would lose the ‘golden goose’”, says Film News Anandhan.

There was a time when Nadigar Sangham even suggested that counseling sessions for actresses to cope up with crisis and lead a normal life, but it didn’t take off!
