  1. Top 10 actresses of Tamil Cinema!!!

    10. Sandhya
She was fortunate that her very first film ‘Kadhal’ was a great hit. But she was not able to translate this initial success into a permanent one as she exhibited a lot of indecisiveness while accepting films. She is yet to find her footing in the industry. She is very young and even at this early stage has established herself as a talented actress who can pull off any role. Dishyum with Jeeva had done quite well.

She currently has Idhu maalai nerathu mayakkam being directed by Selvaraghavan and Koodal Nagar with Bharath in her bag. Her rates are around 18 lakhs per film.

    9. Sneha
She has enthralled the film buffs with her charming smile. Known as Junior K. R Vijaya, has never appeared in glamorous roles in films. She was noticed for her acting caliber in her maiden film Virumbugiren itself. She enjoys a good fan following in Telugu films too. Her link up with Nag Ravi had proved her dear with a loss of many films. She is very cautious while accepting roles and has no qualms about pairing with anybody.

Sneha has acted with almost all top heroes in the field including Kamalhassan. In the advertising field also, she regularly gets offers for homely appearances. Pudhupettai, her last release in Tamil had brought her accolades for her more than convincing portrayal of a vamp. She is being seen more in Telugu these days, but she has Pallikoodam under Thankar Bachan lined up. Presently charges around 30 lakhs per film in Tamil,40 lakhs per film in Telugu.

    8. Meera Jasmine
The only actress in the list who has won a national award. She is perhaps one of the few contemporary leading ladies who have been noticed more for her acting skills than for anything. Began her Kollywood journey with Run opposite Madhavan, which was a superhit. She was also part of Mani Ratnam’s Ayutha Ezhuthu. Her last big hit was Sandakozhi with Vishal and directed by Lingusamy.

She has had a low key 2006, but she has two movies awaiting release early in 2007. Parattai Enum Azhagusundaram, her first movie with Dhanush and Thirumagan opposite S.J.Surya are the films. A lot of rumors had been sparked off from the sets of Thirumagan regarding Meera’s relationship with S.J.Surya. This has led to the movie generating a lot of expectations. She charges around 30 lakhs per movie.

    7. Reema Sen
She burst onto the Tamil screens with Minnale. She had a quite time after her first film. It was more than a year later that she landed her next hit with Dhool opposite Vikram. She was also getting offers from Telugu and Kannada industries. In 2004, Chellame became a runaway hit with major contributions from Reema Sen. Then came Giri and a year later Thimiru followed making her a lucky heroine to work with.

She may not be doing a load of films, but she is in demand. Her latest movie Rendu opposite Madhavan too is enjoying a good run at the box office. Though she has a success percentage shared by very few, she hasn’t been able to place herself among the top ranked actresses. Another actress who may be a victim of the glamour trap. She is paid nearly 25 lakhs for a movie.

    6. Bhavana
Though she made her debut with Chithiram Pesuthadi, this girl from Kerala was booked in a lot of movies even before the release of her first film. Veyil has been a shot in the arm for her career that is still in its early stages. Apart from being a reasonable hit, Veyil has brought her critical acclaim. She may be invited into some very attractive projects in the near future. Lingusamy’s production debut Deepavali, Aarya with Madhavan,

Koodal Nagar with Bharath and the much awaited Bala’s Naan Kadavul are her upcoming movies. She charges around 9-15 lakhs per film, with rates expected to go up very soon.

    5. Jyothika
The most favoured heroine of Tamil Nadu, Jyothika entered Tamil films through a small cameo role in Vaali. She captivated the audience with her bubbly appearance and acting talents. Most of her movies have done good business. Her performance in Chandramukhi as a possessed girl has received accolades from every quarter. She is reported to have charged 40 lakhs for ‘Pachaikili Muthucharam’, her upcoming venture with Sarath Kumar being directed by Gautham Menon.

Marriage has put question marks on this actress continuing in the industry. Mozhi, an offbeat movie might be her swansong on the silver screen. Her survival in a male dominated industry for more than 8 years talks volumes about her acting skills and talent.

    4. Nayantara
She was introduced to Kodambakkam through Hari’s Aiyya where she shared the screen space with Sarath Kumar. Her traditional beautiful looks became an instant hit with Tamil fans. Even before the release of her first film, she was roped into Chandramukhi by P Vasu for the role of Rajnikanth’s love interest. Nayan started her career with 5-6 lakhs but now demands 25-30 lakhs per film.

Vallavan though not a hit, has put Nayantara in the public eye on a bigger canvas. It might have been because of all that transpired between herself and Simbu, but ‘any publicity is good publicity.’

Nowadays she is concentrating more in Tollywood and there is no news about any new project in Tamil. As many other leading ladies, is yet to get a role that has scope to emote, seems to be caught up in a glamour trap.

    3. Trisha
Considered senior to all the present top heroines, Trisha too, took the path of modeling to enter films. Though Lesa Lesa was her first film, it was Ameer’s Mounam pesiyadhe with Surya which hit the screen first. Slowly but steadily, her career was shaping up with Enakku 20, Unakku 18, Lesa Lesa etc. When her first venture in Gilli with Vijay became a super hit, the industry stamped this pair as a lucky one.

It was in Sami with Vikram that the foundation for a strong career was laid for Trisha. The success of Gilli transported her to Telugu films where she has carved a niche for herself. She is a popular face in Telugu Desam where she is featured with almost all the top heroes of the field. It is reported that she currently charges anywhere from 45-60 lakhs per film there. Kollywood producers are contended giving her 40 lakhs a movie.

She has not had any great successes to show since Gilli in 2004. However her popularity remains enviable. An off colour 2005; Thiruppachi, Ji and Aaru. Unflattering 2006 with below par performance in Aadhi and an average performance in Unakkum Enakkum may have given her a few concerns. But upcoming projects like Bheema with Vikram under Lingusamy and Kreedom with Ajith offer lots of hope. An actress who is yet to try her hand at anything outside regular commercial fare.

    2. Shriya Saran
Shreya came into Tamil films with a small role in Enakku 20, Unakku 18. She was paired with Jeyam Ravi in Mazhai. She is a bold girl when it comes to dropping clothes and appearing in skimpy outfits. Though Mazhai was a damp squib, her glamour tag has enticed the Tamil audience. In Thiruvilayadal Aarambam with Dhanush, this Rajasthani girl has shed all her inhibitions along with clothes.

She commenced her career with 15 lakhs per film. In Sivaji, her salary was twenty lakhs but an additional 5 lakhs was given to ensure that she does not accept any other films till its completion. Acting with Rajnikanth and under the direction of Shankar has elevated her position to dizzy height now. According to trade analysts, Shreya is the only competitor for Asin as of now. She concentrates equally in advertising campaigns. Her actual status would be known after the release of Sivaji. Kollywood sources claim that established banners are whiling to dish out 40 lakhs per project for the damsel. One such offer seems to have comes from director Hari for his next movie with Surya. But discussions are still in the initial stages with Asin’s name in the list too. People don’t care much about this actress’ acting skills. She is seen more as a song and dance material. She is going to find it tough to shed that image.

    1. Asin
This cherubic girl was introduced in Malayalam films. She stepped into filmdom through modeling. A popular model with Alukkas Jewellery and Hayagriva Silks was noted by leading film makers of Malayalam and was absorbed into the world of glamour. She was earning around two to four lakhs in advertisement campaigns, charged five lakhs for a film with Dileep.

Subsequently was paid a sum of ten lakhs for the Telugu original of M Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi and when the film was made in Tamil she was offered 10-15 lakhs. Eventually when her movies started doing well, her rates have also catapulted to a greater height. Asin is very smart and accepts films only with leading stars and big banners. There would not be a dearth of publicity in such films with mega stars and mega banners. Similarly in the advertising field, she endorses products only for leading and top companies. Currently had asked for 50 lakhs for Dasavatharam with Kamal under the direction of K.S.Ravikumar but settled for 45 lakhs. Pongal 2007 is going to belong exclusively to her with Pokkiri and Aalwar lined up for release.

Her bubbly nature, charm and refreshing screen presence have endeared her to audiences. She has not yet got an opportunity to showcase her acting skills to any great extent apart from the out of the ordinary role in Gajini; she remains largely untested on this front. However Dasavatharam alongside Kamal may prove to be the yardstick by which she is judged.

  2. Top 10 actors of Tamil Cinema!!!

    10. Simbu

If there is a prodigy in Tamil cinema then he is the one. He turned director last year but not with the best of results. However he remains to be a big draw getting 1.5 crores for a movie. His last hit was in 2004 (Manmadhan), but that does not seem to deter him from proclaiming out loud and clear that he wants to be the next Superstar. Industry sources opine that if only his movies were more tightly budgeted, none of them would have incurred losses. Quite a loyal fan base ensures a good opening for his movies. Made at close to 4.5 crores, his movies sell for nearly 6 crores. His next is yet to be confirmed. He was christened ‘Little Superstar’ by his dad, whether he leaves behind the ‘Little’ and moves on is something only time can tell.

    9. Sarathkumar

Began as a villain and his penchant for action elevated him to hero status. Pulan Visaaranai was his ticket to Kollywood and he has not looked back since. He started off by winning over a few fans with Cheran Paandiyan. Nattamai, Suryavamsam and Natpukkaka became cult movies in the rural regions where they still pull crowds. There was a time when his movies in rural settings were sure hits. His movies receive the best of receptions in Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari; areas where a Sarath Kumar starrer is considered a Minimum Guarantee proposition. That magic may not be there now but Sarath Kumar is sure a force to reckon with. His directorial debut, Thalaimagan fared decently and Goutham Menon’s Pachaikili Muthucharam has taken a good opening. A hit here could soar up his ratings. He is one actor who can ask for a higher pay if the director is promising. Reports are that he took 1.25 crores for Pachaikili Muthucharam. His movies are usually made at a budget of around 3 crores and sold for 4 crores. However, Pachaikili Muthucharam made at 3.5 crores was sold for 7 crores.

    8. Vishal

He is just around three years old in the industry, yet he has managed to create a market for himself. He is proving to be smart in choosing scripts and diligent in performing roles. To date, he has not set a foot wrong. He has an incredible 4/5 record with Thaamirabarani managing to hold its own among the biggies of Pongal. In fact the movie was sold for quite a good price on the day of its formal launch; something that happens only with movies of Vijay and other bigger stars. Sivappathigaram, his only movie that was not a hit still managed to bring home profits for the producer. His fan base that is growing with each passing day is turning out to be his biggest strength. Already commands 1.5 crores. The budget for his movies is close to 4.5 crores and can sell for nearly 6 crores. Appears as a cop next in Sathyam.

Captain has a spot reserved all for himself. Who said that he had run out of steam? His movies are still big draws in the rural parts of the state. Captain remains strong as ever. Perarasu did well last year and now Sabari is eagerly awaited. He gets near 2 crores for a movie in addition to the distribution rights for a certain area. One may find it hard to believe, but it is true that none of his movies to date have incurred losses and that is something. It is not for nothing that producers still want to make movies starring Captain; he is a Minimum Guarantee star in almost all parts of the state. His movies, made at a budget of 3.5 crores sell at close to 4.5 crores.

    6. Surya

He is the cool dude of Kollywood. He has managed to develop a faithful following for himself in a short time. He always keeps his fans guessing because of his seemingly natural inclination towards experimentation. His last movie Sillunu Oru Kadhal may not have done exceedingly well but he continues on the hot list. He gets nearly 2 crores for a movie. His movies are usually made at 4.5 crores and if decently made can fetch around 6.5 crores from the distributors. Vaaranum Aayiram with Gautham is expected to rocket him higher.

    5. Vikram

Some may have rated him higher; but his absence from the box office for the last one year has not helped his cause. But he is not the one to cave in so easily, after all he fought a long battle before finally being accepted into the industry. He is getting ready with Bheema and Susi Ganesan’s Kandasaamy. He is the King of variety; you never know what he is up to. He doesn’t have huge fans associations usually associated with big stars. Though his last hit was back in 2005 with Anniyan, he is still most wanted. His movies do not usually cross 5.5 crores in budget and can do business of around 8 crores. Draws around 2.5 crore per movie. The one glowing exception being Anniyan; which had been made at a till then unheard of budget and had sold for close to 30 crores.

    Salary: 2.5 Crores

    Trade value:
    • Production cost of the movie involved: 5.5 Crores
    • Movie sold for: 8 Crores

    Future projects: Bheemaa, Kandasaamy

Number of years in the industry: 15

    4. Ajith

Varalaaru is the only movie of his that did well in the last few years, pushing him higher up the ladder. His fans don’t seem bothered about the outcome of his movies. They just want to see their Thala in action. His movies are assured of bumper openings and even if his movies disappoint he doesn’t. He managed to capture the imagination of many with Vaali and they have retained faith in him ever since. Female fan following for this man has been high ever since the days of Amaravathi. Takes away 2 crores for a movie. If made at around 6 crores (they usually are) his movies can be sold for up to 9 crores to distributors. Is getting ready with Kreedom and the remake of Billa.

Number of years in the industry: 15

    3. Vijay

He is the man of the masses. He has nearly perfected the art of entertaining people with dialogues, songs & dances, and an equal number of fights. Playing Vijaykanth’s younger brother in Senthoora Pandi put him in favor with Captain’s fans. The openings that his movies take are truly astonishing. His movies sell like hot cakes as soon as they are announced. His movies are almost sure of collecting a minimum amount from theatres (Minimum Guarantee). He is paid nearly 3 crores a movie and is also given the distribution rights for some areas – a testimony to the guarantee of success that he brings. The budget for a Vijay movie is somewhere between 7 and 7.5 crores. They sell at a price of close to 11 crores. These are the figures that have been collected since the release of Pokkiri which is turning out to be a big hit.
    Salary: 3 Crores

    • Movie sold for: 11 Crores

    • Box office verdict: Blockbuster
    • Year: 2007

    Future projects: Azhagiya Tamil Magan

Number of years in the industry: 15

    2. Kamal Hassan

There is no need to write much about this man. He is a phenomenon by himself. He knows everything that an actor and film maker needs to know. He is the quintessential expert on movies. What he does on screen is the next lesson in acting for all lesser actors. There were some very adventurous people who had questioned his box office fire power. Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu seems to have sent them running for cover. He is now readying Dasaavataram for a grand release. The budget of a Kamal movie is subject to the cast, crew, director and storyline. If the idea is worth it, then no producer will hesitate in sanctioning a mammoth budget. Dasavataaram is being made on nothing less than 35 crores. A normal Kamal movie may however be made at around 10 crores and will surely sell at close to 15 crores. Testimony to the fact that his movies are undisputedly Minimum Guarantee. His pay, well it may be 5 crores cheque along with a share of the business of the movie.
    Salary: 5 Crores

    Trade value:

    1. Rajnikanth

Even the badshahs of Bollywood marvel at this one man’s ability to bring people into theatres. Getting his date is equal to unearthing a treasure for any producer. When his films release all others move aside and wait for it to finish its victory lap. No one disputes his status as the biggest star the industry has ever seen. His style is what makes the movies a treat to watch. He is the one actor who has transcended all barriers of language and culture (he has fan following in Africa and Japan). Sivaji is due for the 14th of April; we all wait with bated breath. Minimum Guarantee is a mild term for this man; Maximum Guarantee may describe his status better. His pay is of little consequence; latest reports suggest a figure of 15 crores and the distribution rights for some areas too. If not the distribution rights, it is a percentage of the earnings (40%). It is being said that Sivaji will sell for nothing less than 60 crores. Distributors trust him with their money; he is known to compensate their losses if there are any. His movies are usually made at a bold budget of close to 20 crores and sell for around 28 crores.
    Salary: 15 Crores

    Trade value:
    • Production cost of the movie involved: 20 Crores
    • Movie sold for: 28 Crores
