Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone score big as ‘Cocktail’ becomes big hit

Saif Ali Khan has all the reasons to break into a wide grin.

His ‘Cocktail‘ has managed to nett 55 crores in it’s first week, hence turning out to be his biggest week ever, either in a solo or multi starrer.

After a 36 crores weekend, the film held on well in the weekdays as well and though there was a slight decline in collections from Tuesday onwards, it wasn’t scary enough to lead to any alarms.

In fact the collections were pretty much as per industry norm of 50%-60% fall in collections over the weekdays, hence resulting in the kind of total that now marks ‘Cocktail‘ as a definite hit at the least.

It’s eventual fate depends upon the second weekend though.

The Dark Knight Rises‘ is the major release of the weekend and since that too is expected to create havoc at the box office on it’s first couple of days at the least, ‘Cocktail‘ should ideally come back on track from Sunday onwards.

Hollywood euphoria is expected to settle down by then and family audience should be favouring the ‘desi daaru’ of Saif-Deepika-Diana all over again.

All of this means that while 75 crores is most definitely achievable from here, it would be interesting to see if the film crosses the 80 crores mark.

There is competition in store week after week (Kya Super Kool Hain Hum and Jism 2) which means ‘Cocktail‘ would have to hold on ground quite firmly.

However, given the fact that Saif didn’t quite have a happy outing with ‘Agent Vinod‘ just a few weeks back, one can be rest assured that he would happy with anything between 75-80 crores for ‘Cocktail‘.

Cocktail review

Cocktail is a cute chick flick with a pretty hero. More than the story it unfolds, the film lives up to its name because of the diverse influences that drive the story and its characters. It is written by Imtiaz Ali, and you spot dollops straight out of Jab We Met, Socha Na Tha and Love Aaj Kal. Bits off the pages of Archie comics, a dash of American sitcoms such as That ’70s Show and Friends, and some Woody Allen wit vie for space.

It’s almost as if Homi Adajania was out cocktailing these elements before resorting to the tested formula of rona dhona that normally defines our romantic dramas.

The film was obviously trying to understand how GenNow perceives love and friendship, and also carve a space somewhere in between those two emotions in bid to avoid the commitment hassles.

The 40-year-old hero at the centre of the story is being passed off as a 30-something desi dude in London. Saif Ali Khan’s Gautam sets out to give those familiar Archie vibes, crossing the cute quotient with Ashton Kutcher’s flirty Michael Kelso from That ’70s Show.

Gautam shares an accommodation with two girls. Deepika Padukone plays the spoilt rich Veronica (any resemblance with the same-named comicbook hottie from Archie’s world is absolutely intended). Then there is the coy Meera (debutante Diana Penty). While the serial dater Gautam and wild child Veronica have opted to live together minus commitments, Meera is thrown into the mix out of compulsion. A twist ensures she is stranded in London. Veronica spots her and takes her home.

The film takes a funny turn with the entry of Gautam’s mother (Dimple Kapadia). To hide his raging no-frills romp with Veronica, Gautam passes off the more traditional Meera as his girlfriend. Mom is pleased and, forced to hang out with Meera in her presence, Gautam predictably starts falling for her. That’s when Veronica decides she loves Gautam.

Cocktail becomes your standard triangle tangle after a breezy first half. The film labours to leave a footnote that a zillion others have underlined in the past — when it comes to love, the heart and the brain are forever at loggerheads. Director Adajania, who made his debut with the quirky Being Cyrus a while back, was clearly driven by mainstream diktats this time.

If Cocktail works, it is mainly for the characters Imtiaz has penned as well as the cool with which the lead stars live them on screen. Adajania’s success lies in assorting the right cast. This film didn’t demand intense acting talent. It just needed the stars to look their roles. You’ll love Saif, Deepika and Diana basically because they were being themselves.

  1. What’s Good: The screenplay and dialogues; the songs; the performances.

What’s Bad: The same ol’ story; the stretched second half.

Loo Break: A couple in the second half.

Verdict: Cocktail is a fun movie but gets a bit marred by the dreary second half.

Watch or Not? Watch it for the enjoyable and funny first half.

  2. Boy loves girl. Boy ends up falling in love with girl’s best friend. Best friend also loves boy. But best friend sacrifices boy for girl. You get the drift?

Meera (Diana Penty) is stranded in London after her husband Kunal (Randeep Hooda) refuses to take her home. Her knight in shining armour turns out to be the party-animal-drunk-out-of-her-wits Veronica (Deepika Padukone). Veronica takes Meera home and allows her to live with her.

Soon, Veronica hooks up with serial-dater-and-womanizer Gautam (Saif Ali Khan) and the three start living in together. Initially, Meera cannot stand the sight of Gautam but manages to bear him as he is her best friend’s boyfriend. When Gautam’s mother (Dimple Kapadia) lands up at their door, he puts up a show of Meera being his girlfriend (rather than the boisterous Veronica of whom his mother would definitely disapprove). Gautam’s mother immediately approves of the shy, homely Meera and has great plans for their wedding back in India.

Forced to hang out together, Gautam and Meera start liking each other and sparks fly between them. On cue, Veronica decides that she loves Gautam and wants to spend the rest of her life with him.

Where does this love triangle go from here? Does Kunal re-enter Meera’s life? The rest of the movie plays out the answers.

  3. Script Analysis

Imtiaz Ali and Sajid Ali’s story is a run-of-the-mill love triangle. But it’s the screenplay and dialogues that make the movie enjoyable. Though Saif Ali Khan has some really cheesy pick-up-lines, he gets the best dialogues.

The story is really predictable and the second half brings the movie down. There are unexplained parts in the movie that confuse the viewer. Why does Veronica just take home a random girl she met? How and why does a nice girl like Meera fall for the quintessential bad-boy like Gautam? Why does Kunal, who ruthlessly threw Meera out on the streets, agree for her façade?

    Star Performances

Saif Ali Khan is very good as the playboy Gautam and equally cute when he tries to win Meera. Deepika Padukone plays her part of the confused-spoilt-brat-with-a-heart-of-gold quite well. Diana Penty surprises with an apt performance as the subdued Meera (though she didn’t have much of emoting in the film). Boman Irani is really enjoyable as Saif’s uncle. Dimple Kapadia is good as Saif’s mother.

    Direction & Music

Homi Adajania’s direction is alright. While he has chosen a bland story, he’s handled it quite well. Much of the credit also goes to cinematographer Anil Mehta. Pritam’s songs for the movie are very nice. Editing by A. Sreekar Prasad could have been tighter.

    The Last Word

Cocktail is a nice and enjoyable movie for the dialogues, songs and performances. But the second half is a real drag.

  4. Saw the movie today..Pathetic is the word! The movie’s emotional bits fail to connect with the audience. after Interval, I felt each minute as an hour. The break between dialogues, sub-standard comedy, lack of a logical story thread, Saif’s over acting and old age looks (his face started showing his age!) were all a big turn off! Some party scenes seemed like space fillers rather a necessity.

  5. The story may be same old Bollywood story but the story presentation, good dailouges, good music tracks and some good comedy. Moreover the story line is fast you don’t have to even go for a loo break. Paisa wasool flick.

  6. The movie is so much fun. I watched it at Wave Cinema, Raja Garden, first day first show and I’m totally amazed. What an acting and what a story! Loved it yaaar! I think you all should watch it.
