Sexy Shriya Saran’s case is a queer one indeed: she has one of the best bodies in the business as has been proved time and again in many films and in still photographs, has a flooring smile, looks pretty and acts reasonably well. She has all the makings of a successful heroine; yet, success has played ‘hide and seek’ with her on many occasions in her almost decade-long career.
Her last few films in Tamil like Kutti, Chikku Bhukku and Rowthiram failed to click at the box-office in a big way. Obviously and for no fault of hers, the tag of an ‘unlucky actress’ got stuck with her. She danced for an ‘item number’ in Vikram’s Rajapattai along with Vikram and Reema Sen; even that film didn’t manage to create any ripples at the box-office!
She has a few Hindi and English projects on hand which keep her going. Some time back, she said that she was looking forward to playing the deglamourized village belle’s role in films. Her recent film in Telugu did fairly well and she is also starring in another Telugu film titled Life Is Beautiful. “I’m confident of getting good projects in Tamil in the near future. In the past, I have refused more than offers than what I accepted.
“It’s true that I have no Tamil film on hand but the situation could change soon. We actresses work under so many constrains placed around us which are invisible to naked eyes. We have to look sexy and glamourous and at the same time we also have to ensure that our act is not labeled as ‘obscene’. More often than not, we don’t’ get to perform our ‘ideal’ roles and have to make many compromises to survive in the industry.
“I feel that luck plays a pivotal role in an actress’ life and one can’t change his/her destiny however hard the effort is. I’m awaiting for a super-duper film like Sivaji: The Boss which I did opposite Rajnikanth Sir,” says Shriya Saran, confidence gleaming in her eyes.
