Directors need assistant directors to help them in developing the script and taking forward it to its logical conclusion. During the shoot, it’s the duty of the assistant directors to ensure that everything is kept ready for the shoot to commence. They’re the ones who toil with the heroes, heroines and other actors in ensuring that they get their dialogues correctly during rehearsals prior to the commencement of the shooting.
A.R Murugadoss, who is considered as a director who has the knack of delivering one super-hot after another, has a team of assistant directors numbering 10. Shankar, the other mega-director in Tamil films, does have many assistant directors at his disposal in order to ensure that the shooting of the film continues unhindered. Directors making small-budget and medium-budget films don’t prefer more than 2-3 assistant directors.
The case of Prabhu Solomon, however, appears to be different. Prabhu Solomon, who was highly appreciated for his 2010 super-hit film Mynaa, is presently making Gumki which has a debutant hero in Vikram Prabhu, son of veteran actor Prabhu. Prabhu Solomon is said to be assisted by an ‘army’ of 22 assistant directors during the film’s shooting which has been going in the forest areas of Moonaru and the surrounding districts.
When queried as to what was the need for such a large number of assistants, Prabhu Solomon said that he only wanted to give opportunities to the many assistant directors who had dreams of their own to make it big in films. He also adds in a lighter vein that the team helped him stay bold and courageous as they were shooting in thick jungles full of wild animals!
