The Karnataka Film Producers Association (KFPA) succumbed to extreme pressure from the Sandalwood industry to lift the ban on Actor Nikita Thukral imposed last week in the wake of alleged wife-beating by popular star Darshan.
Darshan was arrested by the police and remanded to custody following a complaint by his wife Vijayalakshmi who had alleged torture by him when she had questioned about his activities.
She had also taken strong objection to his close assoication with Nikita, asouth Indian bilingual actor. KFPA members and fraternity members, including the family of late Dr Rajkumar, had expressed vociferous protest over the three- year ban slapped on the Actor by Association President Muniratna and said the decision was unilateral.
A local court had denied Bail to Darshan and also declined to take cognisance of the plea by Vijayalakshmi on withdrawing the case stating that she had been giving contradictory statements.
Nikita, who had acted in over 30 films and had recently turned a Film Producer, pleaded innocence and claimed she had no role in the quarrel between Darshan and his wife. She had acted opposite to Darshan in some films. A beaming Nikita thanked all those who supported her and vocied protest against the ban ”for an act which I am not even aware or responsible for.
Film Producers say sorry to Nikitha, lift ban
In a volt face, the Karnataka Film Producers’ Association (KFPA) today revoked the three year ban earlier imposed on multi-lingual actor Nikitha Tukhral.
The Association had banned the upcoming actor after she was accused of triggering a storm in the family of Kannada star Darshan by having a romantic relationship with the married man. KFPA took the extreme decision accusing Nikitha of spoiling the ‘domestic harmony’ of the actor’s family.
The decision had been slammed by noted actors, woman activists and even some producers who had demanded immediate lifting on the ‘ridiculous’ act. However, Nikitha had flatly denied it and said the relationship was professional and she was in no way responsible for the Darshan’s family problems and said she was not given a chance to put across her explanation and the decision was unjust.
Darshan was arrested by the city police on September 5. After his wife Vijayalakshmi filed a police complaint that he, in a tipsy state, had beat her up and threatened to kill her with a revolver. However, she relented later following pressure from the producers who had invested in Darshan starrers under production and told a court that she sustained injuries due to a fall in bathroom.
The local court, had remanded the actor to 14 day judicial custody. Today the KFPA President Maniratna told reporters that the ban was a wrong decision on part of the association and it had decided to lift the ban with immediate effect. Meanwhile, actor Darshan, applied for bail yesterday but the hearing of the case has been postponed till Sep 19, when his judicial remand ends. Currently the actor is admitted to a hospital for treatment of suspected jaundice and asthma.
