Manmadhan Ambu 8 Manmadhan Ambu Review

Kamal Haasan is not just an actor, he is an inspiration! He has sported various roles on and off screen, and has won accolades for his every venture. Irrespective of whether his movie bombs at the box office or runs to a golden jubilee, he continues to make movies of substance. And after the thrilling Unnaipol Oruvan, the legendary actor is back on screen with Manmadhan Ambu (Cupid’s arrow). This time, Kamal is back with one of his favourite directors K.S Ravikumar. The Kamal-Ravikumar combo has always delivered hits. Remember the hilarious Avvai Shanmugi (1996), Thenali (2000), Panchathantiram (2002) and Dasavathaaram (2008)? Interestingly, this combo has never failed at the box office till date.

Manmadhan Ambu has the beautiful Trisha pairing up with Kamal Haasan for the first time in their careers. Maddy (Madhavan) is also back with Kamal after Anbe Sivam. Who can forget the powerful Anbe Sivam (also scripted by Kamal Haasan)? The portrayal of his own character and that of Madhavan are complete and flawless – and both the actors have lived their roles. Manmadhan Ambu has a huge star cast, which includes Sangeetha, Ramesh Arvind, Usha Uthup, Manju Pillai and Suriya (in a cameo appearance). More that half the film was extensively shot across Europe and on a cruise ship.

Kamal Haasan’s comedies are always unique and ribtickling. There is a streak of humour in this man that makes his comedies inspire laughter like only he can. Michael Madhana Kama Rajan, Avvai Shanmugi, Pammal K Samandham, Panchathanthiram, Vasool Raja MBBS are proof enough!

Returning to Manmadhan Ambu, it narrates the story of three persons: Major Mannar (Kamal Haasan), industrialist Madhan Gopal (Madhavan) and Ambujakshi (Trisha). In addition, Sangeetha plays the role of Deepa (divorcee with two children), Ambujakshi’s close friend. Ramesh Arvind is Mannar’s close friend suffering from cancer. Then there is Oviya, Madhan’s cousin.

Madhan is deeply and madly in love with actress Ambujakshi but he always suspects her, which eventually ends in quarrels. When Ambujakshi goes abroad (Paris) to enjoy her vacation, Madhan gets irritated and approaches private detective Mannar to spy on her. Mannar accepts the job on one condition: Madhan has to take care of the medical expenses of Rajan (Ramesh Arvind). Meanwhile, Deepa also goes to Paris with her children. And with that, the hilarious joy ride begins!

The film also has some interesting flashbacks like Madhan’s accident, Mannar’s commando life and marriage! The film gets even more hilarious when Mannar hatches a conspiracy against Madhan.

When it comes to performances, who can be better than the legendary Kamal? Yes, it’s Kamal all the way; like an all-rounder he is right there in all departments. His witty one liners, dances and stunts are a treat for the audience. Manmadhan Ambu is definitely a treat for all Kamal fans. Madhavan is not too far behind. He has played a complex character with ease. He has once again proved his versatility and acting brilliance. Pretty lass Trisha has dubbed in her own voice in the film. Her subtle emotions need special mention! So get ready to see a new Trisha.

Sangeetha has given her best and she fits the bill perfectly. Ramesh Arvind, Urvashi, Kitty, Usha Uthup, Maju Pillai, Oviya and Kunjan have done their parts well. Suriya make a special appearance in a song sequence with Trisha. We salute producer Udhayanidhi Stalin for his wonderful efforts! As Kamal rightly said, the star cruise plays a very prominent role in the film.

Above all, it’s director K.S Ravikumar’s racy screenplay that makes the film more interesting. He has ensured that fans are not disappointed all through. Music by Devi Sri Prasad is apt and perfect, with the song ‘Neelavaanam’ standing out. Cinematography by Manush Nandan is rich and sophisticated & Shaan Mohammed’s editing is neat and sleek.

The film is horrible. Very shallow storyline, slow and dull pace, empty dialogues, poor performances, bad songs, unbelievable story, Hero looks like a father of 5, hackneyed expressions by kamal; on the whole, a film sans any common sense. It is a bad entertainer and comes nowhere near Tenali, Panchatantram, etc. of Kamal. Looks as if Kamal and Ravikumar wanted got tired of the movie and just wanted to complete it somehow. Kamal’s acting is awful. The film is painful, please avoid this monstrosity. Just because it is kamal and KS.Ravikumar, dont be fooled. The film is a waste of time and money.
The review is only meant not to offend kamal, maybe. Everybody who has watched the film has felt that the film is bad, very bad, very slow and dull, with absolutely no entertainment value at all.

  2. Raj says

Film is good, But the climax is very short and not thrilling one.

Overall Good movies, nothing like the usual stories.

    Kamal is Great. :)

  3. jjeye101 says

Wasted 3 hours of my life watching this awful movie, it was an absolute drudgery sitting through this. This movie reflects why utter rubbish like this Kamal Hassan ego-trip keep getting churned out – its the fault of these sort of reviews that don’t spell the obvious, i.e. PEOPLE, DON’T GO TO SEE THIS CRAP.

This movie perfectly reflects why self-flagellation has kept the Tamil cinema going for all this while – the strange disease of “can see one time” (as we say it in Tamil) and “time past”. Well, really, NO MORE – I mean, go read a book, watch a game, wash the dog, have sex…do anything, but please STOP this practice of keeping old farts like Kamal in business.

GREAT AND BRILLIANT NICE A MUST WATCH FAMILY ENTERTAINER GREAT MOVIE.
A MOVIE TO WATCH WITH FAMILY VERY NICE MOVIE THESE ARE THE CRITICS WHO SAY NONSENSE. ON THE WHOLE THE MOVIE IS VERY NICE.PLEASE DONT TELL UNWANTED THINGS IF YOU DONT LIKE THE MOVIE.ITS A BRILLINAT MOVIE.EVEN ENDHIRAN WAS A BORING HEADACHE MOVIE FULL OF GRAPHICS.INSTEAD OF WATCHING ENDHIRAN YOU COULD HAVE GONE FOR THE GREAT HOLLYWOOD MOVIES FAR BETTER.

  5. Girish says

Completely agree with most of the comments here ! The 1st half is ‘good and watchable’. Might create an interest in the audience as to what happens next. BUT you are in for a big surprise in the 2nd half. COMPLETELY CONFUSING storyline with TOO MUCH OF TWISTS AND ROLEPLAYS (believe me I had to sit pause and think for a minute or so at times to get a grip and stay along with the director’s narration)
Has a scent of ‘climax of panchathandiram’ a bit BUT NOT EVEN A TAD CLOSER TO IT.

P.S: Good thing that I did not watch this movie at the theater ! My family would have kicked my ass for good had I taken them spending money !! (This was not even worth the MB’s & GB’s – if u know wat i mean)

Maybe you ll have to watch it to understand our comments ! “yaam petra thunbam ivvayagamum pera vendum”!!!! ;) but dont forget to pour in your negative comments once having watched it ! These kind of scripts should NOT BE ENCOURAGED in tamil film industry. Although crux of the story is ‘okay’, the way it has been potrayed AND WRAPPED UP IN A HURRY is SIMPLY HORRIBLE.

Let me end my comments with this. Looks like im promoting the movie rather than the other way around!

P.S again: I am NOT a kamal hater for your info. This is a neutral review.

  6. C.ANBU says

SUCH A WORST FILM ,I EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE.
ANY WAY KAMAL SHOULD NOT WRITE STORY IN FORTH COMING
FILMS, THAT IS ONLY WAY PEOPLE COULD BE SAVED.LET US
HOPE , KAMAL WILL NOT REPEAT THE SAME MISTAKE.

  7. Tamil Guru says

What ever happened to Kamal from the 80′s and early 90′s when he churned out stella performances! Him like Rajani are becoming jokes. In fact the entire Tamil/South Indian movie industry is so “backwards”. I remember a time when I could tell my north indian freinds that the south made better more meaningfull movies but now Bollywood has surpased the South and are coming out with original movies. When will the south sort it self out and get rid of its “masala” and “virumandi” attitude!!??
