Director Mani Ratnam, who has carved himself into one of the finest filmmakers India has ever seen over the past two decades, has stated that his entry into cinema was an accident.

Speaking to film critic Baradwaj Rangan, an extract form their conversation has been revealed to the world.

‘I was interested in cinema only as a viewer. I never thought I’d take it up as a career. I never thought I would sit and write and actually direct films,’ Mani Ratnam said.

‘I don’t make movies to give messages. Films are about sharing an experience or sharing your angst or your concerns about something with a larger group of people,’ he said.

Now that Mani Ratnam has come forward with such truth, we might just see many others come out and tell their stories about their career in Cinema. Baradwaj Rangan‘s book is titled ‘Conversations with Mani Ratnam‘ is available at stores now.
