The two-day FICCI convention was held in Chennai recently.
The event was moderated by Radhika Iyer and the participants included Kamal Hassan, Chairman, FICCI MEBC Priyadarshan, Indian film producer, director and screenwriter, Suresh Babu, Telugu film producer, Barrie Osborne, American film producer, Siddharth Roy Kapur, MD, studios, Disney UTV, Mr. Jayaram, actor in Malayalam and Tamil films, Ramesh Arvind, actor, director, producer and also a TV host.
This session served as a platform to discuss the future of the Indian film industry and probe some of the major problems that the industry is witnessing.
Kamal Hassan stressed on the importance of concentrating on the script rather on “imitating the popular culture and dress code.”
Priyadarshan complained on the dearth for good scripts as every filmmaker is focusing on monetary gains rather than on the content.
He also said, “The essence of great theatrical acting is killed by the way in which new actors graduating of the National School of Drama are trying to copy the modes of cinema.”
Osborne and Siddharth Roy Kapur, however, presented a bright picture by elaborating about the changes that the film industry has undergone and were optimistic about its growth into the next century.

Malayalam industries 4 famous directors namely Salim Ahmed, Rajesh Pillai, shajoon Karyal and Padma kumar are coming together to celebrate 100 years of cinema. All 4 of them would do 4 independent projects tentatively titled as 1,2,3,4. The initial news was that Mamooty would be part of this project but now since he could not accomodate his dates the director Padma kumar has plans to rope in anoop menon.
Rajesh pillai’s film being titled colour pencil will be for children. he confirmed 3 child artists will play the lead along with kunchacko boban who will be thefather of the kids. The mother is yet to be confirmed. Shajoon Karyal Lst wish will have Biju menon in the lead. Salim Ahmed’s film would be titled Ayalwhich will have Fahadh Fasil and Salim kumar in the lead. The directors are planning to go at a shot and wind up by February and thereby to get an opening in the Cannes film festival.
