Story of the Movie is Pretty simple. But, screenplay of the movie is one of the best which I have seen recently. I have not even seen REPUTED DIRECTORS with such a wonderful screenplay and it is really hard to believe that it is Lakshmy’s debut movie. She had handled a NEW WAY for showing FLASHBACK Scenes.
I am quite sure Lakshmy Ramakrishnan will be one of the REPUTED DIRECTOR in Tamil Cinema in future and will take our TAMIL CINEMA worldwide
Aaranya Kandam and Vaagai Chooda Vaa were wonderful movies and fetched us lots of international awards, but we people didn’t watch the movies in Theater and both the movies were loss to the producers. Please don’t do the same to this movie too, it is a wonderful movie with BEAUTIFUL MESSAGE for each and every human being in the world. Please pass on the your feeback to your friends after watching this movie. WORD OF MOUTH is the most powerful weapon for PROMOTION.
It is a different attempt, may not offer what you expect out of a regular film but will give you something which would never expect.

K.Balachander wants to Direct a Movie again after watching this movie
Jayam Raja mentions that he couldn’t guess the STORY OF THE MOVIE till the Climax as it was a GREAT THRILLER with an INTERESTING SCREENPLAY
Actress Lakshmi Ramakrishnan, who played strong supporting role in Yutham Sei (She really shaved her head for the movie – DEDICATION) is making her debut as Director with Aarohanam
Story is based on a “series of amusing events that take place on a single day”. The film would follow a 17-year-old boy and his sister who are in search of their missing mother.
The entire film was shot with a Canon EOS 5D digital camera and was completed in 20 days with a budget of just 35 Lakhs. But, you would believe me if I say it was taken in 60 days with 3 Crore budget with high quality Camera. People even spend around 5 Lakhs for taking 20 minutes short film. This Movie is a LESSON for Short Film Directors and People who want to direct good movies with a lesser budget.
All the Characters in the movie are shown POSITIVE which is rare in Tamil Cinema
All the Characters in the movie have really done a good job.
Actress Viji suits the character perfectly. Even her EYES act and conveys a message which can’t be even explained through words
Music by K was AWESOME. It really suits the mood of the movie. Thappatam is a CLUB SONG which is surprisingly VERY DECENT. Song will definitely be a hit and it will be USP for this movie. There are 3 Songs in the movie with 3 Wonderful Instrumental Music. Indha Vaan Veli is a TREAT to Melody song lovers
Cinematography by Shanmugasundaram was too good. Editing by Kishore was Awesome. Nowadays, People will be unable to sit for more than 150 minutes and this movie runs for only 90 minutes which is a Revolution in Tamil Cinema. I hope many more movies with 90 minutes duration will come in future.
Even, We were little worried whether the movie will satisfy the Fans as the posters were similar to an Art Film while promoting it. We promoted it as we heard good reviews from the Cine industry people. Today, we got an opportunity to watch the Premier Show of the Movie and we felt really happy and proud for Promoting this WONDERFUL Movie with A BEAUTIFUL MESSAGE at the end for each and every human being..
Story is SIMPLE but SCREENPLAY was AWESOME. One of the best screenplays we have seen recently.
We are quite sure that Lakshmy Ramakrishnan will be one of the REPUTED DIRECTOR in Tamil Cinema in future and will take our TAMIL CINEMA worldwide
This Movie will fetch lots of National and International Awards.
But at the same time, hopefully it will be COMMERCIALLY SUCCESS too as I am quite sure whoever watches the movie will be SATISFIED.
Lakshmy Ramakrishnan, who has proved her mettle as an actor has surprised everyone with her directorial venture Aarohanam. The movie deals with a sensitive subject with aplomb. It speaks about how common problem affects the underclass people more than others.
Storyline
Nirmala (Viji Chandrasekar) is vegetable vendor and is hit by a car.
The story moves to flashback showing Nirmala as single mother, who has had a miserable marital life leading to estrangement from her husband and is taking care her of her daughter Selvi (Jai Quehini) who is geting married soon and son Senthil (Veeresh).
On this day of accident the children are worried that their mother is not to be seen and start searching for her around the city in vain. Takes help from their father and nearby.
Nirmala does escape from the accident almost like a miracle.
What is ailing Nirmala and what happens to the family? Watch the movie to know the answers served with some sensitive message on bi-polar disorder faced by poor people.
Script review
Lakshmy Ramakrishnan has scored well in her maiden attempt as a director. She has chosen a sensitive subject against the backdrop of a poor family and depicted the travails of the family in a realistic manner. The relationships are portrayed well and the separation of the couple is told in a credible manner.
The bi-polar disorder angle adds an interesting dimension to the story. Lakshmi has subtly underlines the difference in the way rich and poor handle the same problem. She has also conveyed a strong message in this regard without getting preachy.
On the flipside the way the rich women handle the accident has not been handled properly. Suspense has been artificially thrust in the script just to add interest over the proceedings. Suspense is not something playing hide and seek with the viewer. It should evolve naturally. Lakshmi has failed in this regard.
The party scene is entertaining but it lacks credibility.
But Lakshmi has more than compensated for these lapses by extracting good performances from her cast and portraying the lives of the under privileged people.
Cast and crew:
Viji Chandrasekar is a casting copu to say the least. She has lived the character. She has got into the skin of the character. It is long since we have witnessed such a strong powerful female character and an actress doing full justice to the job. Hats off Viji and Lakshmi.
Jai Quehini looks beautiful in a no-makeup get up. She has handled the emotional situations like a seasoned actor. The performance promises a bright future for the young girl who has dared to take up a non glamourous role at this age.
Jayaprakash, Uma Padmanabhan, Krishnan, and Sampath have are flawless in their acts.
K’s music travels smoothly with the movie. It creates the right mood and supplements well to the emotions of the scenes. Thappattam song catches up instantly.
Pros:
Sensitive subject, sensitive and realistic handling, good performances, good music, short and sweet (90 minutes) narrative.
Cons:
Artificial suspense and not so exciting climax.
Verdict:
Lakshmy Ramakrishnan has shown that a neat movie can be made without big budget and big stars if you have a good story and sensibility to handle the complex issue.
