In a counter filed by the fifth defendant (The South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce) in the Thuppaki title issue case, it was clarified that when the titles are registered by the filmmakers, they are cross checked if a similar title has already been registered. This is done not in consonance with the Copyright rules but to ensure that no confusion prevails later on.
Further, there is no rule that a part of the title cannot be used by another filmmaker. The defendant gave examples of Gramam and Thiruttu Gramam and Aadhi and Aadhi Sivam. These titles were all acceptable as per the policies followed by the Film Chamber, it was argued.
On hearing this argument, the magistrate posted the case to August 3rd and until then extended the interim stay on the title Thuppaki.
It may be mentioned here that Ravi Devan had filed a case alleging that the title of the Vijay starrer Thuppaki, which is directed by AR Murugadoss, is so similar to his title Kalla Thuppaki and would cause confusion.

It might be noted that the order was issued on a petition filed by the producer of an upcoming movie titled ‘Kalla Thuppaki’.The makers have alleged that they registered the title Kalla Thupakki in 2009 itself.
