Veteran director K Balachander celebrates his birthday today, July 9th, 2012. He is known as the mentor of the two stalwarts of the Tamil cinema today – Superstar Rajnikanth and Kamal Hassan.
This talented director went on to win the National Award five times and has been bestowed with the Dada Saheb Phalke award, the highest honour for those in the film industry. Apart from this, he has received several prestigious awards and honours.
Known affectionately as Iyakkunar Sikaram, he has not only directed films but has also penned scripts, produced movies and acted in a couple of film.
