Dolby and other surround sound system providers has come up with the concept of 7.1 surround sound.
The AM Studios of Mozart of Madras AR Rahman , is the first studio in south india to pioneer this technology. The 7.1 surround sound track will have 8 channels of audio.
They are Left, Centre, Right, Left Side Surround, Right Side Surround, Left Rear Surround, Right Rear Surround and a LFE ( Low frequency enhancer channel).
The standard 5.1 Surround Sound track will only have Left, Centre, Right, Left Surround, Right Surround and LFE.
So the 7.1 surround sound has 2 extra channels which can be used to create more powerful sound for cinema. This technology can be used to create more immersive cinema experience.
Hollywood have already produced many films in 7.1 surround sound. Toy Story 3 is the first film to have 7.1 surround sound track. Bollywood has also followed suit in producing films with 7.1 audio.Dum maaro Dum, Rockstar are namely a few films that were released in 7.1.

Director Ameer’s Aadhibhagavan will be the first Tamil feature film to be mixed in 7.1 Surround Sound at standard resolution (48 Khz standard definition audio).
Apart from this AM Studio also features 3D sound capabilities using high quality tools. The same technology was used in Tarsem Singh‘s Epic film Immortals.
