Raattinam Raattinam review

Story

Love can make or break things. It is feeling that drives the lives of many youngsters, In Tuticorin, there is one Jayam (Lagubaran), a youth who spends all time with his friends. One day, he meetsDhanam (Swathy), a school final year student and its romance straightaway. Interestingly her father works in Tuticorin Port while her uncle is a advocate. Jayam’s brother has political influence.

When the romance between Jayam and Dhanam comes to light, all heels break loose in both the families. The couples flee their house and situations become murkier. But when they return to their house, they are shaken and stirred. But the highlight is the climax that is racy and riveting.

Performance

Lagubaran and Swathy doesn’t look like novices. Both gets under the skin of the character and excels. Their on-screen chemistry is awesome.

All the rest of the cast including Thangaswamy as Lagubaran’s brother and Elizabeth asSwathy’s mom play their part well. The director deserves accolades for choosing right faces to do each and every role.

Analysis

Thangsamy should be commended for using Tuticorin as its backdrop. The background offers some freshness to the script.

A realistic film the climax makes up the movie. It is no doubt a harsh reality. Pain for some becomes pleasure for others. Music by Manurameshan and cinematography by Raj Sundar is adequate.

Comments

  1. What it is about…

Rajarathinam Films’ Raattinam has Laguparan and Swathi in the lead. The others in the cast are Ajai Adith, Elizabeth, Tharun master, Umasree, Revathi and Raja. Raj Sunder has handled the camera and the film is edited by Gopi. K. S. Thangasamy is the writer-director of the film produced by J. Mahalakshmi. Manuramesan has scored the music. The audio was recently released by director K. Bhagyaraj and received by director Gautham Vasudev Menon.

    Music highlights

‘Asathum azhagu,’ sung by Ajay Sathyan and Navin Madhav, is the best — it has lyrics by Viveka. A simple melody with guitar and percussion instruments, the song stands out because of its strong vocals. ‘Yele yae pulle,’ rendered by Karthik and Chinmayi, is fast-paced and catchy. ‘Yeno en idayam,’ sung by Navin Iyer and Haricharan, is slow and mellow. ‘Yethu yethu’ is folk number sung by Anoop Shankar and Jazzie Gift — here the lyricist successfully brings out the many facets of Tuticorin. ‘Yakkai sutrum,’ written by Francis Kripa and sung by Anoop Shankar and Bhavyalakshmi, is fast-paced. ‘Enakkulle enakkulle,’ written by the director himself, is short and melodious.

    What they say…

Producer J. Mahalakshmi: An ardent fan of films, I was keen to produce one. When I learnt that K. S. Thangasamy, an associate of directors Kanagu, K. Stephan and ‘Naveen’ Muthuraman, had a good story, I asked him to narrate it. The story was good with some interesting twists and turns in the screenplay. And I gave the green signal to Raattinam.

Director K. S. Thangasamy: Raattinam is a love story with family sentiment and a social message. I have handled the film realistically. That’s why I promoted all new faces in the film except Elizabeth, Tharun master and director Raja who is now acting on the big as well as the small screens. People will certainly like the movie as it has an arresting climax.

Hero Laguparan: I have worked as an assistant to a couple of directors. Director Thangasamy saw my photo on Facebook and asked me to meet him. That’s how I got a break in Raattinam. It is a love story which has ample scope for a newcomer to showcase his talent. When I saw the film at the dubbing stage, I felt it has the makings of a hit.

Music Manuramesan: I am from Kerala. My father, S. Ramesan Nair, is a lyricist. When I told him I wanted to be a composer, he was very happy. My first film was Pidichirukku directed by Kanagu. There I met director Thangasamy, who worked as an associate to Kanagu. I have done many Malayalam movies and a Telugu movie. Raattinam has melodious songs which will surely appeal to listeners.

  2. For serious filmmakers, movies should be made with a purpose. They should reflect our daily lives and offer solutions for all troubles. It should not just be seen as a medium of entertainment.
Tamil cinema is driven by commercial cliches as has always been hero-centric. But much recently, came a host of movies that is story-driven.
The success of films like Kadhal, Vazhakku En 18/9 in the recent past has given some hope.
Thangasamy is the latest addition to Tamil cinema. His Raattinam is too close to reality and racy and riveting all through. Much like Kadhal, Raattinam provides loads of fun in the first half, takes viewers on a roller-coaster ride in the latter part to end on a harsh but a realistic note.
The movie has newcomers Lagubaran and Swathy. It has an ensemble of newcomers on pivotal characters and there is freshness in the script.
Produced by Rajarathinam Films and presented by Vendhar Movies, the movie has music by Manurameshan and cinematography by Raj Sundar.
The story occurs in Tuticorin. Jayam (Lagubaran), a happy youth is in love with a school student Dhanam (Swathy), whose uncle is an advocate and brother a police man. Jayam’s brother is into politics.
When the romance between them is known to both families, troubles erupt. The couples flee their house only to result in more loses in the families.
Both Lagubaran and Swathy play their part well. Thangasamy has ensured that they emote well and no where they look alien to the script.
Their on-screen chemistry is good. The camera captures Tuticorin well. Music by Manurameshan is average and cinematography by Raj Sundar is commendable.
Raattinam is a movie that is good and entertaining. Welcome Thangasamy to the big league.

  3. After debuting successfully with Raattinam, actress Swathi seems to be taking her time choosing her projects.the actress has signed on to be part of two films, directed by Bala Sekaran and Balasubramaniam. Titled Oruvar Meethu Iruvar Saainthu, the film will directed by Bala Sekaran will be a family entertainer. She is also part of Arasu Vidumurai.
