Harbhajan Singh: It is a big game, if we win this one then we will have to get the momentum going till Finals of IPL. It makes a difference when you have experience at the top and having Gibbs back in the side is definitely a real boost to our side.
Lasith Malinga: I always try to take wickets so I’m happy that I have done that. I know I can’t swing the ball much so I know I need to take wickets to play international cricket. Dhawal Kulkarni: Feeling happy that I got a chance to play and pick 3 wickets. I am feeling very happy. Whether I play the next game or not is upto the selectors. My strength is to maintain a good line and length. As a youngster it is a great challenge to play against such stalwarts.
Dwayne Smith: It’s a great privilege to open with Sachin. Have opened before, so not something new. We talked about being positive and taking the side home. It’s good to start well and get some runs. It’s the crunch time in the tournament.
Match Predictions: Mumbai has the best bowlers and Chennai has best batsmen on the cards. Since its a Bangalore pitch 170+ will be still not enough. I just dont understand why morons call this as CSK’s luck and blah blah blah..If you analyse all the teams in the competition, accoring to me, only Delhi and Kolkata deserved to be in Play-Offs. Teams like Mumbai,Banglore and Hyderabad were heavily dependent on 1/2 players and wanted them to perform everytime. Luckily for Mumbai, Malinga performed well and Rohit Sharma was decent and they are through. For bangalore Gayle won them half of the games, De-vilears the rest, and when both failed in the last game, they lost. For Hyderabad, inspite of Steyn’s deadly bowling and Shikkar Dhavan’s consistant batting, they lost games due to their pathetic ( I can’t find a worse word) club-level fielding. Pune had none…No team effort and no individual stars and predictably finish last.
On the other hand, if you observe, CSK, RR and KXIP played more lika team, with everyone contributing at some point or other. And among them, CSK were clearly the best. I can’t say if CSK deserved to play in play-offs..but I can vouch RCB just didn’t deserve it.
Another point is the scheduling, Chennai finished the league games well before the rest and had to wait for other results. Had it been the other way round, with Bangalore finishing their games before Chennai and Chennai playing Punjab in their last outing, the same crowd would have praised Chennai for playing well when it matters. Its all phychological here.
Bottom line: There is no luck, the top 4 who qualified were the best among the 9.
Who would have thought last week that the defending champions Chennai Super Kings will live to fight another day? The Mumbai Indians come into the play offs with a bit of form after their thumping 10 wicket win over Rajasthan Royals on Sunday.
Chennai Super Kings
It has been a mixed season for CSK and they have struggled to get momentum with a winning streak, which they used to do in the previous seasons. Victories and losses have come alternatively and have often been marginal, which has made their campaign even tougher. The batting has failed to click as a unit and although some of them have made the odd good innings, they have struggled to put up big scores consistently. The bowling has done a better job compared to the batsmen and relies heavily on the likes of Hilfenhaus and Ashwin.
Player to watch out for:
MS Dhoni: The CSK skipper has not had a great season by his standards so far but don’t be surprised if he turns it around in the knock-out stages, as he has done often in the past.
Mumbai Indians
Much like their opponents, Mumbai Indians is another side which has qualified but hasn’t dominated other teams in the league stages. The victories were close but the losses were often big, as is reflected in the net run rate. However, they got the much needed form in their last league game against Rajasthan Royals where the openers Sachin Tendulkar and Dwayne Smith led them to a 10 wicket victory. Mumbai have depth in their batting but their major problem seems to be at the top; they have used numerous opening pairs and it remains to be seen if they will stick to Smith-Sachin combination in the knock-out stages. The bowling, as always depends a lot on Malinga, and as always, he has delivered.
Player to watch out for:
Sachin Tendulkar: The maestro has had a silent IPL season by his standards, which in large measures was caused by an injury he suffered in the first game against the same opponents. He made them pay for it in their next clash with a masterly half century, and with another match winning knock behind his back, he will look to carry his good form into the eliminator.
Battle within the battle:
Ben Hilfenhaus vs Dwayne Smith: Hilfenhaus will never forget his previous game against the Mumbai Indians. The pacer conceded 14 runs off the final 3 balls to Dwayne Smith which resulted in a thrilling win for the Mumbai Indians. Hilfenhaus has compensated for the last over mess up with a couple of match winning spells, and has since been used more in the top than in the death. He might be up against Smith again, as the latter opened with success against Rajasthan Royals.
Injury updates: Anirudha Srikkanth is not available for the knock-out clashes as he injured himself while fielding in the game against KXIP. S Badrinath is likely to return to the side in his place.
Doug Bolinger, who flew back to Australia for personal reasons, is also not available.

IPL 2012: CSK seek redemption in Eliminator against MI!
Defending champions Chennai Super Kings and current 2010 finalists Mumbai Indians go head to head in the IPL 5 Eliminator at Bangalore’s Chidambaram Stadium on Wednesday. The losers will exit the tournament, while the winners will play the losers of the first Qualifier between Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders for a place in the final on May 25.
Chennai have been lucky to reach the playoffs. It was Royal Challengers Bangalore’s choke in a chase of a modest 133 against Deccan Chargers in their last match that paved the way for Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s team, which won just eight of 16 games in the group stages.
Chennai’s season got off on the wrong foot with an eight-wicket loss against Mumbai but improved as the tournament went by, if unspectacularly and well below expectations of a champion Twenty20 team. The highlight for them so far has been their chasing down 206 against Bangalore early in IPL 5. Chennai won three matches on the bounce before capitulating to Kings XI Punjab in their last match, threatening to end their campaign, but Bangalore’s loss to Deccan proved to be manna from heaven for Dhoni and his team.
However, all that is a thing of the past now. Chennai have got a golden opportunity to redeem themselves. If they can pick themselves up in the playoffs and find form, they can complete a hat-trick of titles. They have the resources; it’s just poor form of their batsmen that has had their campaign in stutter. Their batting woes get magnified by the fact that there have been just five fifties from their batsmen this season, and three of them from the South African Faf du Plessis who may not play in this match as Michael Hussey is set to retain his place. It’s high time Hussey, Murali Vijay, Suresh Raina, Dwayne Bravo and Dhoni himself came up with weighty contributions with the bat. Their bowling has faired better but still there is room for improvement.
On the other hand, Mumbai will go into the contest in much better shape. The Harbhajan Singh-led team won 10 out of its 16 league matches. Mumbai never really faced the threat of missing out on the final four, but their odyssey to the playoffs has been far from perfect. Sachin Tendulkar got injured at the start of their campaign and then Harbhajan copped a lot of flak for not leading with propriety. With the team’s blow-hot-blow-cold run in IPL 5, things looked ominous at one time. But Tendulkar returned just in time to put everything back in order. He may not have scored big runs but his presence has acted as a tonic for others and all of a sudden, Mumbai look formidable. They also seem to have sorted out their opening woes.
Mumbai have unearthed a star in West Indian Dwayne Smith, who opened to score an unbeaten 87 against Rajasthan Royals in the last league match. Also, in a previous encounter against Chennai, he hit Aussie fast bower Ben Hilfenhaus for two fours and a six to turn the last-ball thriller in his team’s favour. Then there is Rohit Sharma, who is among the five players to have hit a hundred this season, while Ambati Rayudu and Dinesh Karthik have been quite handy. The presence of Kieron Pollard gives them a different dimension altogether.
Their bowling is no less threatening. Lasith Malinga, their spearhead, remains a man-mountain. The Sri Lankan has taken 22 wickets in 13 matches at a miserly economy rate of 6. RP Singh and Munaf Patel have been good in patches and Harbhajan, after a poor start to the season, has hit top gear in the last few matches and that makes the bowling equally potent.
On paper and form, Mumbai go as favourites into the match but in this format we have witnessed unexpected things happen. They have to be cautious against Dhoni’s men who seem to have lucky stars shining on them.
CSK Qualified For Play Off in IPL 2012!
Dale Steyn produced a fiery pace bowling spell of three for just eight runs as Deccan Chargers knocked Royal Challengers Bangalore out of the Indian Premier League with a nine-run victory in a tense match here today. Steyn claimed the wickets of dangerous Chris Gayle and his opening partner Tillakaratne Dilshan and Zaheer Khan as RCB failed to chase down the target of 133 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium at Uppal.
The victory by the Chargers also meant that defending champions Chennai Super Kings go through the play-offs stage, along with table-toppers Delhi Daredevils, Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians.
RCB collected 17 points from 16 matches, the same as that of Chennai but the latter made it to the play-offs stage on better net run rate.
Delhi now play Kolkata in the first qualifier in Pune on May 22 while Chennai take on Mumbai in the eliminator in Bangalore on May 23.
The Chargers, who ended the tournament at eighth out of nine teams with nine pints from 16 matches, thus spoiled RCB’s chances of a play-off berth just two days after knocking out Rajasthan Royals from the tournament.
Steyn was ably supported by Ashish Reddy (3/25), Amit Mishra (2/26) and Veer Pratap Singh (1/26) as RCB could score 123 for nine from their 20 overs.
For RCB, captain Virat Kohli top-scored with a 40-ball 42 while Saurabh Tiwary and Gayle contributed 30 and 27 respectively.
But RCB’s run chase never got going as they lost wickets at the crucial stages. Gayle taking 24 runs from the second over bowled by Manpreet Gony was the only highlight of the RCB chase and all the batsmen other than Kohli, Gayle and Tiwary could not reach double digits.
