Mullai Periyar Dam row – Movie directors to go on fast 8 Jan

The Tamil film industry is all set to organise a day-long fast to express its solidarity with the Tamilnadu government on the Mullaiperiyar dam issue. The proposed fast comes in the wake of protests by Malayalam film personalities in support of the Kerala government’s claim that the Mullaiperiyar dam is not safe, ccording to reports, the members of the Tamil Film Directors Association led by its president Bharathiraja will be organising a fast at a village in Theni district (close to the Mulllaiperiyar dam ) on 8 January.

Several hundred members of the association are expected to take part in the protest.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a source close to the developments said, ‘we have arranged vehicles to take people to Theni district from Chennai. We feel that it is an appropriate time to show our support to the State government on this emotional issue’.

Asked whether the other associations of the Tamil cinema will take part in the protest, he said, ‘ we have urged all our members to attend without fail. Also, a letter has been sent seeking the participation of members from various other trade bodies of the Tamil film industry including Nadigar Sangam’.
