Movie: Engeyum Eppothum
Star Cast: Jai, Anjali, Shravanand, Ananya
Direction: Saravanan
Production: A.R Murugadoss, Fox Star Studios
Bouquet to debutant filmmaker Saravanan for etching out a film that speaks about feelings of people and the value of every single life. With handful of characters, the director has come out with a flick that is filled with fun, joy, tears and other human emotions.
What begins as a journey in a bus takes twists and turns, and when we think all is well that ends well, a shocking incident happens. But hold on! There is no preachy stuff as Saravanan manages to lace the message with lighter moments in the film.

For many of us road mishaps mean just numbers – the number of people perished in such accidents. Rarely we get to see the colourful life the victims enjoyed without knowing that death is coming close to them.
‘Engeyum Eppothum’ attempts to take a closer look at such people. In a nutshell, it is the story of two couples who end up romancing in contrasting manner. They happen to meet at one point where a tragedy strikes in their lives.

Coming to the story, two buses coming on opposite direction crash at each other on the National Highway in Villupuram. Tragic scenes follow. Meanwhile, a flashback unfolds and the life of a lover couple is narrated.
Amudha (Ananya), an engineering passout comes to Chennai from a village in Tiruchy for an interview. Situation leads her to take the help of a stranger Goutham (Sarva) to locate the company. Initially she is reluctant, but slowly gets acquanited and starts admiring him.
Meanwhile, there is another romance in the form of Kadhiresan (Jai) and Manimegalai (Anjali). A soft-spoken good-hearted Kadhiresan falls for a young nurse Manimegalai, who is out-spoken and lives life her own way.

After completing the interview, Amudha returns to Tiruchy but her thoughts revolve around Goutham. Goutham too wants to see her and express his love. Amudha comes to Chennai in search of her lover. At the same time, Goutham decides to go to Tiruchy to hold the hands of Amudha.
Meanwhile, Kadhiresan and Manimekalai get along well and after a series of interesting events in their romance, they decide to go to a village near Tiruchy to meet Kadhiresan’s parents. Gautam, Kadhiresan and Manimekalai boards a bus to Tiruchy, while Amudha takes a bus from Tiruchy to Chennai. Near Villupuram, the buses collide. What happens then forms the climax.
Sarva as a suave city youth fits the bill well. His cool and casual expressions are adequate for the role. Ananya as an innocent bubbly rustic girl who comes to city is impressive. Anjali as a out-spoken and straightforward girl in love with Jai is tailor-made for the character.

Watch out for Jai. He as an innocent youth is the scene-stealer. He does his best in the role. The actor manages to leave an impression with his performance.
All the characters are well-written and neatly conceived by the director. They resemble close to real-life. The narration keeps one engaged all through. The contrasting love, loss, gain and sorrow are beautifully portrayed.
R Velraj‘s cinematography and catchy background score of debutant Sathya add solidity to the proceedings. All said, ‘Engeyum Eppothum‘ is a whiff of fresh air in Tamil cinema. Saravanan has certainly made his mentor A.R Murugadoss, who has produced this film along with Fox Star Studios, proud.

Story
It is about two lover couples, their desire to get united in life. But what happens if a tragic incident plays spoilsport in their lives. A road accident involving two buses at a National Highway in Villupuram occurs. Meanwhile, a flashback unfolds and the romance between Goutham (Sharwanand) and Amudha (Ananya) and Kadhiresan (Jai) and Manimegalai (Anjali) is narrated.
A soft-spoken good-hearted Kadhiresan falls for a young nurse Manimegalai, who is opposite to his nature. She is out-spoken and practical in life. Amudha gets attracted to Goutham, who helps her in Chennai when is stranded in a bus stand unable to know where to go when she lands from Tiruchy for an interview.
Kadhiresan and Manimekalai take a bus to go to go to their hometown, while Goutham also boards the same to see Amudha and open his heart.
At the same time, Amudha takes the bus in the opposite to come and meet Goutham. What the buses collide is what the film is all about.
Performance
It is a tailor-made role for Sharwanand. The suave and stylish looks come handy for his character. Equally impressive as a chirpy innocent girl is Ananya. She continues from where she left in Nadodigal. Anjali as an out-spoken girl, who takes every step in her life with caution is equally impressive. She seems to be enjoying the good run in the industry, doing varied roles so early in her career. The real scene-stealer is Jai. As innocent young man in love with Anjali, he is impressive. He brings out the innocence in his character very well.
There are a host of new faces in the film who bring freshness to the script.
Technicalities
If debutant filmmaker Saravanan is the captain of the ship, he has been ably supported by cinematographer velraj. He captures the contrasting lives in Chennai and rural areas well. The mishap scenes and thereafter are well shot by him. Equally supportive is Sathya with his musical score. Not just the songs, but also the background score adds pep to the whole proceedings. Kishore’s editing is crisp and it makes the whole fare racy and riveting.
Analysis
All the characters are well-written. The narration keeps one engaged all through. One gets a feeling of travelling in the bus as the film progresses. The film is a mix of feel-good moments and at the same time emotional moments. Three cheers to Saravanan for making a crisp talked that is racy and riveting and at the same time carrying a strong message.
Verdict : 3.5 / 5
It should be BLOCk BUSTER!!!!!!!!!!!!
With his series of blockbusterfilms under his kitty A R Murugadoss has proved that he is one of the most talented directors of Indian cinema. This young and able director has turned producer with the launch of his upcoming movie ‘Engeyum Eppodhum’.
The ace director in association with Hollywood’s Fox Studios is producing this movie that is seeing the theatres very soon. This is Fox Studios’ maiden Tamil production but they have already set foot in Bollywood with Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘My Name is Khan’.
‘Engeyum Eppodhum’ features Jai, Anjali, Sharvanand and Ananya in the lead roles and directed by debut director, and student of Murugadoss, M Saravanan.
The film is a romantic drama and tells the story of two young couples – one based in Chennai and the other in Tiruchy, who meet at one point in life in an incident that changes their lives upside down.
I jst loved the movie…lots of feel good moments and comedy with great message.
Super movie….hands off director saravanan……
Super movie please watch it in theaters
thanx to all drivers who save ours till now , directr saravanan really hats off ,execellent msg & super comedy thank you EP teams…..
Just watched the movie over the weekend and trust me friends, this is definitely a strong contender for this year’s Award Winning Film. This movie has again re-proved to the world, movie success is definitely NOT in its budget, but is in the in a capable crew (Director, Artists, Music, Story Writer, Editor etc). Cheers to definitely the team of this film for its success. Sarvanan (Hero) has proved a point in Telugu film industry with his Acting Skills and Choosy Subjects and he has again proved himself in Tamil industry.
Good movie… i will watch it…. but defnitely not in theatre…. hahaha…..haaahaaahaaa.
Engeyum Eppothum Bustanic!
Oucha magoucha! Not one but two (to three to four) love stories! They converge than they meet in a disastrous situation. The story is no rocket science! Perhaps, without one, it’s just a message! Travelling on highways is as risky as dancing on a cliff. Looks like director M Saravanan has travelled umpteen numbers of times on highway plying buses! Thankfully, the screenplay is well-etched!
A story is one in which a disaster strikes and characters redeem. A dark theme is one where evil wins (or is dominant)! A parable or fable involves moralized fiction to convey a message! Engeyum Eppothum conveys a message through a disaster. The impact it has on the principal characters is minimized with only tears shed by them. It could be – incident – past – future. Or it could be present – past – future. Even a straighter timeline as past – incident – future could work as a full length movie. In Engeyum Eppothum, the timeline is just incident – past – incident.
Many have observed that this concept may make a five minute short film than a three hour feature film. Nevertheless, the highlights stay fresh in our memory. The screenplay is novel arising out of the characterization of lead characters. The experienced Jai and Anjali dominate – a secret vow to outwit, perhaps? Anjali puts up an award winning performance – not by melodrama but scores by executing her character to excellence.
She is ravishing and covetable as every marriageable man’s dreams. Had she died, the impact could have been far higher. Anjali is alive and kicking. She essays the intelligent and clever wife-to-be that any man would be content with – for a lifetime. Jai hangs on his maturity as actor. He understands his role and portrays the raw innocence to good effect. Jai is the perfect foil for Anjali to play on her dominant antics.
Did Ananya want to appear pretty? Although village-hailing girls aren’t arukkaanis these days, a difference is generally found in their dressing sense. When she steps back from Sharvanand to see if 37G arrives there, her two-inch heels are given away. Her hair too is tied quite in an urban fashion. Nonetheless, she too has done justice. Sharvanand looks good enough, though has not a huge part to play.
Cinematographer Velraj’s excellence and experience can be seen in two shots – when he traverses across from the Meenambakkam Bridge to the bus stop and when he (probably) trolleys in and zooms out (in hindsight) at the same time while Ananya boards the bus. The dimension of the bus in that angle looks dynamic, gigantic, foreboding and threatening, though we are not certain, if he intended. Editing could have added pace but the film is too short already.
Songs are already a hit but the Background Music is nothing to write home about. With choir oohs and aahs in accident scenes, it really isn’t much difference. One should laud the accident scene. We got to witness such scenes in Hollywood but we seem to have gotten close. Looks like M Saravanan has either studied or known the impact of accidents inside vehicles. Velraj’s camera work makes it far too brilliant. The slow-mo and seconds of time-freeze are excellent.
Positives: Anjali, Jai, Velraj, Screenplay, Family Entertainment
Negatives: Non-Movie Theme, Only Love Stories as Plots, Sub-Plots and Mini-Plots, Lack of Attention to Detail (Make-up & Costumes of Ananya), Editing (Confusion in Identifying Buses, INT to EXT & Vice-Versa), Background Music (Average)
Verdict
If the mini-plot of the two newlyweds or father-meeting-daughter after five years had been the plot, the impact could have been far higher for the incident – past – incident structure. M Saravanan exposes his weakness in dwelling on love stories (of even two college students) to contrast the damage recklessness can cause.
The tarpaulin-shielding-the-windshield could not be the cause, if it were to hint at the negligence factor. Also, how could buses collide face-to-face on a two way road with median? Editing could have been clear on this one. Appreciably, it hardly turned preachy though seemed to obviously bring pathos through only tears than incidents or scenes. The director has also leveraged adequate doses of entertainment for families to embrace. Engeyum Eppothum – Crushing G-Force!
Don’t miss it!
Debutant director Saravanan’s Engeyum Eppodhum is an interesting tale of the effects of a tragic accident. Accidents have more or less become a part of our day-to-day lives in the age of super-fast cars, bikes and the tendency among the people to live life to the fullest, forgetting the dangers that are associating with riding and driving speedily.
Two buses collide head-on resulting in a gruesome accident. The accident, unexpected as always, throws up many unsolved questions and destroys the dreams of many. The script travels through the travails and the tears of the passengers as we are literally ‘made to’ travel along with the bus deftly by Saravanan.
Jai and Anjali are in the bus traveling from Tiruchy to Chennai while Ananya and Sharvanand are in different busses bus traveling from Tiruchy to Chennai and from Chennai to Tiruchy respectively. The two buses collide with each other near Villupuram. The rest of the film is about who they are and what happens to their cherished dreams, desires and aspirations.
The film opens with the deadly accident and frequently gets into the flashback mode. Jai’s tricks to attract the attention of the neighbourhood girl and their successive encounters are filmed in an interesting manner. Another interesting bit is the meeting between Sharvanand and Ananya; their chance encounter at the bus stop, which continues in the bus, has been shown rather captivatingly.
The screenplay is pretty interesting as it takes us through the story without us realizing that we are ‘travelling’ along with it. The love affairs between the pairs of Jai and Anjali and Sharvanand and Ananya have been filmed poetically. The way a college boy meets a girl and falls in love with her during the course of the journey is convincing sans any artificial air.
Small instances such as the case of a husband coming to the bus stand to see off his newly wed wife, the cook’s case, the old man belonging to Jai’s village, the story of a father who returns from abroad after five long years who is yearning to meet his child, Ananya’s sister and the Muslim woman shown to be boarding the bus in-between, make the story rather interesting.
It’s to the director’s credit that he has shown almost all the songs in ‘montage’ version except for the song Maasamaa. Though the backdrop – telling the lives of different people assembling in spot with different purposes – isn’t something we haven’t seen before, it’s the director’s handling of the script which makes it rather watchable sans any drama.
Jai has put in a very subdued performance. As always, Anjali’s acting is upto the mark; the mischievousness in her eyes while teasing Jai and the pride in her face when she says that Jai’s her lover are admirable. Anjali’s stunning performance culminates in a very moving climax. Sharvanand, playing a typical urban youth with good heart, fits the bill perfectly. Ananya has done her part very well; the director has toiled hard to ensure that the many characters that are shown in the script have done their respective roles fittingly enough.
Velraj’s cinematography stands apart: be it the bus accident, the sequences inside the bus and outside the bus, his camera work is awesome, to say the least. Debutant music director Sathya has done a wonderful job with already three songs topping the music charts. Sotta sotta… and Un paera theriyaidhu… are very well scored.
Overall, Saravanan has done an amazing job in narrating how an accident destroys the lives and dreams of the many passengers involved and scores heavily in the climatic sequence. Kudos to him!

Brilliant Movie. One line message conveyed very strongly with some lovely & emotional moments of real life.
I enjoyed the movie a lot.
In particular ANJALI is really superb(*****).The character is a tailor made one for her.
If this is movie conveying message and a messiah, it would have become a documentary,
Saravanan, hats off, great screen play to convey the message lucidly ….
Is it donating Body the message or proper road habits the message. either case very fruitful way to say it.
This should be made in all languages, conveying it locally to ensure we start adapting road behaviors , and everybody adopts and absorbs the traffic rules.
We want a world that is safer, and for a safer world we need such communications that would change our behaviors.
after long time I saw the good cinema tamil cinema. it is the good future in director saravanan.M
Amazing movie………..
Good Movie with great message…..don’t miss it guys… :-)
Fantastic movie… I watched it three times till now. It’s not only about the story or the characters in the movie, but the message coveted through the movie. I have been a rash driver all these days but after watching this movie, I have completely changed. I always use to drive at 140 to 160 KM/hr on highways but now I do not cross 80 KM/hr from last three weeks. That is the kind of impac this movie has made on me…Hats off to the Director and the entire crew….
Great debut effort by M Saravanan, the protege proves his mettle with swift storytelling, natural characters, non linear narrative, excellent SFX for a tamil movie, breezy songs and an above average BGM. All actors have played their role to the hilt. And the director has weaved in multiple stories with equal importance with the RTA (road traffic accident, medical jargon) being the pivotal incident. Kudos to the team, Mr. ARM for supporting and Fox Studios for their maiden venture in Kollywood. A must watch for meaningful cinema fans. A commercial flick with a message!
this movie total waste….dont see it in theatre…buy CD and watch it in home……
Splendid Movie ! Pls Don’t miss watching this Movie in Cinema hall. No words to express at all !!!!!!!
I have become a great FAN of the Directore SARAVANAN !
Hi, I had seen this movie. The new approach was good.
To, The director!! Your intention of this movie is to highlight the organ donation is it? If so on the climax, you must have closed the EYES OF the hero saying that he has donated the Eyes to eye bank. Though the theme was too good, some areas did not reach all sort of people. Any how i liked the concept and the way u took the movie. CONGRATS!!!! May be by paying more attention at small areas too u can reach all level of people!!!
the moie is really good……..i will watch it second time………..
