As a step to save historic monuments and preserve culture the Tamil Nadu government has ordered a permanent ban on shooting films from more than 85 monumental sites that are being preserved by the Archeological Department. The order has been brought into effect from August 9 and was enforced by tourism secretary VK Jayakodi.
This order has come in the wake of a letter from the archeological commissioner who had complained to the state that many monuments in the state were getting damaged as well as their beauty and cleanliness taking a backseat when teams directing films visit the places for shooting purpose. Moreover such shoots were a hindrance to visitors and tourists who came there to appreciate architecture.
Of all the places, the most popular is the Thirumalai Naicker Mahal which is a treat for lens men and directors alike. The structure which was constructed towards the end of the 16th century was shaped up by an Italian architect. Only one-fourth of the structure has stood the test of time.
This move by the law makers has been welcomed by all those who favour and want the art and culture of the state to be preserved for posterity.
