A rough estimate revealed by an insider, who has been in Kollywood for the past two decades, says that as many as 200 films have been lying in cold storage for various reasons like not getting theatres and the requisite finances to release them.
41 films have been lined up for release in the next couple of months, says the source and adds that the ‘monopoly’ being held by a particular production house which has 900 out of the 1200 theatres in the State in its ‘control’ is hitting the small and medium producers very hard.
Films nowadays don’t run for 100 days and are expected to attract attention and become a hit in a couple of weeks’ time, failing which they are taken off the theatres. Producers of small-budget films are forced to take their films off theatres in one or two weeks even if the film does well at the box-office as they can’t afford to arrange for large-scale publicity for their films.
Big production houses like Kavithalaya & Ayngaran Films, which were not releasing their films ‘Krishnaleelai’ and ‘Kalavadiya Pozhudhugal’ respectively in that order, have finally decided to release them. Kavithalaya has come down from its rigid stance after director Selvan threatened to go on an indefinite ‘fast-unto-death’ protest asking the producer to release the film at the earliest.
Similarly, Ayngaran has finally paid heed to film-maker Thangar Bachchan’s request to release the film soon. In all likelihood, the Prabhu deva-Bhumika Chawla starrer ‘Kalavadiya Pozhudhugal’ would hit the screens on the 29th of this month.
