vaanam bharath sneha ullal 2 Vaanam review

Vaanam looks all set to become one of the most-talked-about films in 2011. And we have three reasons to it. It is an early bird in the unexplored multistarrer genre, the narration is totally new to Tamil cinema and finally, the message it delivers is strong.

Credits go to director Krish, who has repeated the Tollywood magic in Kollywood too. Equally laudable are the producers, actors including STR, Bharath, Anushka and music composer Yuvan Shankar Raja.

For, all the above have joined hands to make a meaningful cinema, which at the same time is commercially viable too. Vaanam has in store comedy, romance, sentiments, suspense, and of course, a very good message.

Cable Raja (Simbu) is a cool cable TV operator who is ready to tell any number of lies to woo his ladylove (Jasmin Bhasin). Bharath Chakravarthy (Bharath) is hell bent on proving his mettle as a rock star. And we have a ravishing sex worker Saroja (Anushka), who vies to escape from the clutches of a prostitution house and earn more independently.

Meanwhile, there is a Muslim couple (Prakash Raj & Sonia Agarwal) who are victims of violence. Call it destiny or celluloid drama, these five come under one umbrella. What’s next, it forms the crux of the journey of fate, each one being the steering force of his destiny.

STR is back after Vinnaithandi Varuvaya and he looks like a typical cable guy who we see roaming in our neighbourhood. Bharath is suave while Anushka’s looks add immense glamour to the movie. Vega, Prakashraj and Sonia Agarwal prove their acting mettle well.

Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music is one of the important highlights of the film, with Evandi Unnai Pethan… already becoming an anthem. Other technical departments are okay. The strong point and weakness of Vaanam is its narration, which at times is confusing. But for this, Vaanam marks the beginning of a welcome trend. Kudos to Krish & Co.

What Works: Screenplay, Yuvan Shankar Raja, Nirav Shah, Perfect casting of actors, Performances
What doesn’t work: Lengthy first half, an unwanted song from Telugu version.
Verdict: Miss it at your own risk!

  1. Nearly a year after the release of ‘Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya’, Simbu arrives with ‘Vaanam’. Just like VTV proved to be a chalk and cheese from his previous movies as it had him in different shade, this one too proves to be a similar kind of show. Of course, we have him in a mass hero image, but that is only to a certain extent. You can sense it with a realistic climax. Director Krish shot to critical acclaim with Telugu film ‘Krish’ and his remake in Tamil proves to be a trendsetter in Tamil film industry as well.

The film revolves around characters in 5 parallel stories from 5 different cities. Cable Raja (Simbu), a Rock star (Bharath) and his girlfriend (Vega), a pathetic widow (Saranya) and her father in law, Rahim – a Muslim (Prakash Raj) remaining on the bad pages of police and his wife (Sonia Agarwal), Saroja – a sex worker on the run to Chennai with the dreams of starting her own brothel house. Filled with its own dreams, the characters travel to Chennai and come across each other for an unexpected climax.

A heartfelt welcome to director Krish… Though his inspiration rises from various international flicks like 21 Grams, Amores Perros, Babel and the most famous ‘Powder Blue’, it’s worth mentioning he has exploited his potentials to a greater magnitude. Despite having handful of star-casts, it’s Krish remaining under spotlights for his commendable screenplay.
Narrating a film with 5 parallel stories isn’t an easy task and it’s blatant that Krish has wriggled his brain to get the best one.
There are whole lots on conflicts involved in the each story and bringing them together for a bigger one in climax deserves appreciation.

It looks like ‘VTV’ has changed the mindset of Simbu and his preference towards some newfangled scripts makes him an outstanding actor now. With a running length of approximately 3 hours, Simbhu gets a portion of not more than 40minutes. It’s Prakash Raj, Bharath, Saranya who have lot of scope till penultimate sequence and Simbhu rises to the peak during the climax portion. Bharath goes for a laudable performance and in fact he exhibits more heroism throughout the film. Director Krish has very much inspired from Che Guava’s life as his debut directorial ‘Gamyam’ based on ‘Motorcycle Diaries’ had the concept of a rich guy understanding the reality of life during a journey. In all likelihood, the delineation of Bharath’s character is much the same. Prakash Raj exerts his best efforts and watch out for the climax sequence where he wins thundering applause from audiences.

Saranya and the actor playing her father-in-law’s role are splendid. Santhanam’s comedy tracks offer a refreshing break from the emotional ride of these characters. VTV Ganesh evokes laughter with his dialogue delivery. Jasmine fits to the role of a posh girl.

Technically it’s Yuvan Shankar Raja’s background score that creates more depth to the screenplay. The song ‘Vaanam’ is repeated throughout the film. ‘Evandi Unna Pethan’ has been shot stylishly. ‘No Money, No Honey’ is a special treat for mass audiences.

On the flip side, the first half becomes lengthy with unwanted songs (including a song from recreated from Telugu version). Simbhu could have avoided poking on other actors like ‘Kuruvi’ Vijay, ‘Singam’ Surya (Brahmanandam referring it to Anushka) and Dhanush won’t give money…

But when it comes to a complete analysis, ‘Vaanam’ can be regarded as one of the best movies of 2011 and a special film in the careers of Simbu & Bharath.

  2. Paramasivam says:

‘Vaanam’ is an outstanding drama that connects the lives of various characters with an unpredictable climax.

If there has to be a clear example for films that are made with a perfect pre-production work, ‘Vaanam’ can be taken as an illustration. Handling so many artists with 5 parallel stories isn’t a cup of coffee for anyone. But director Krish has done a remarkable job with his script. His conceptualization is just beyond brilliance and this kind of movie is something new and fresh to Tamil Cinema.
The film revolves around 5 different stories as it follows
Cable Raja (Silambarasan), a well educated, good looking guy is trapped in poverty. Making a beautiful rich girl (Jasmine) to fall in love with him lying that he belongs to a rich family, he is on the desperate run of Rs. 40, 000 for New Year Party’s couple passes. Then there is Bharath (Bharath) along with his music band from Bangalore on his way to Chennai for a rock concert. Rahim from Coimbatore along with his wife Sara (Sonia Agarwal) is heading to Chennai in search of his lost brother Umar. Saroja, a sex-worker no more wants to be caged in a brothel house of Sulurpettai. She wants to start her own business and starts her journey to Chennai. A widowed mother is ready to sell her kidney to get a money so that she can get back her son after paying back the interest money, who is held as hostage by a money lender.
These storylines may literally confuse you with what it has got to do with them. But then the climax will have a clear answer to your confusions. When these characters are running for their own conflicts, an unexpected twist brings them together and makes them act selflessly.
Director Krish and his script are the main heroes here. He doesn’t leave out any characters without importance. Though Silambarasan happens to be the major highlight, Krish gives equal roles to Bharath, Prakash Raj, Anushka, Saranya and almost everyone in the frame.
While Simbhu is seen with jovial shades, we see Bharath as a rough and tough guy uncaring about others, whose life changes on the course of travel. Anushka gives more priority to performance than the glamour. Prakash Raj gives a noteworthy show while Sonia Agarwal doesn’t have much importance. Saranya and the actor in father-in-law’s role are appreciable. Santhanam’s comedy tracks are the biggest plus. Simbhu’s performance during last 25minutes is the best one from the actor.
‘Evandi Unna Pethan’ lives up to the expectation levels, but doesn’t have a best dance from Simbhu while he trivializes it with a best effort in ‘No Money No Honey’. Bharath’s performance in ‘Who Am I’ and ‘Vaanam’ song is laudable. Cinematography by Nirav Shah is a visual treat. Anthony must have strained a lot to give best outputs, for a film like these should have kept him insomniac for several days.
On the whole, ‘Vaanam’ may not cater to the commercial group of audiences, but is a brilliant piece of work and the climax is just stunning.

  3. hi!
    film is superb….incredible.
    it has powerful climax…
    salute str….

  4. very ok movie..after the blockbuster ‘KO’ this movie vaanam is completely overshadowed..simbu has degraded himself by insultn the superstars…no wonder K.Vanad threw him out of KO…pls be a better person b4 being an actor.

  5. Heart touching movie. Five different story and one climax. Vaanam movie story deals with mumbai terrorist attck. Good attempt, dont miss it

  6. Abitha Anand says:

Doing a remake involves lot of care and sensitivity. Its success lies in not reminding the audience of the original or draw comparison. ‘Vaanam’, inspired by Tollywood’s ‘Vedham’, is on the dot, courtesy director Krish’s narration and versatile performance of lead players, especially Silambarasan.

If Karthik of ‘Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaya’ worked wonders thanks to Silambarasan’s encore, his role as Cable Raja in ‘Vaanam’ goes a step further to portray his firm grip over the medium.

A combination of five stories meeting in the climax, ‘Vaanam’ is a novel attempt in Tamil cinema and Krish pulls it off well thanks to a beautifully conceived script and well-written characters. It is like reading a set of interesting short stories.

Let’s check out what these five stories are: Cable Raja (Silambarasan) is a fun-loving middle class youth. As like anyoneelse, he aspires to make it big marrying a wealthy girl.

Comes to his help are his two friends (Santhanam and VTV Ganesh) to help him make some money and take his girlfriend Pooja (Jasmine) for a party in a star hotel.

Saroja (Anushka) does the world’s oldest profession. She is in huge demand from rich people. A gold at heart, she cares for others too. Unable to put up with troubles in her profession, she decides to escape from the brothel racket. But fate intervenes and she falls into the hands of the local police and she is on the run.

Bharath (Bharath) wants to become a big rock star. When he misses the flight he plans to reach the place by road to perform a concert. But the travel brings in him a lot of change and his outlook towards life changes.

Then there is a story of Rahim (Prakash Raj) and wife Zara (Sonia Aggarwal), who are affected by communal clashes in Kovai. They lose their children and are in search of peace.

And there is a story about a poor weaver and his daughter-in-law (Saranya), who suffer at the hands of a money-lender. They come with a mission to Chennai to set their financial position right.

What happens when all these men and women meet at one point is a real twist. Krish deserves accolades for attaching human emotion and elements everywhere in all these stories.

Silambarasan easily steals the show. He is immaculate and impeccable. The actor’s mastery in handling a complex role is well. He is complimented well by Ganesh and Santhanam thanks to their humouours one-liners.

Prakash Raj is as solid as rock. His subtle emotions are noteworthy. Anushka is impressive as a commercial sex worker. Bharath looks flashy and does his best as a rock star. He plays to his strength. Vega, Saranya and ‘Kadhal’ Dhandapani are also there.

Yuvan Shankar Raja’s songs are good and the pick of the lot undoubtedly is Yevandi Unnai Peththan… which is already a chartbuster. He scores well in background score, while Anthoy’s scissors does its best to ensure momentum. Thanks to Nirav Shan who has canned every story in different light tones.

All said, there are some minor hiccups especially in the pace and tempo in few stories. However ‘Vaanam’ is no mainstream masala movie. But an attempt worth to cherish.

  7. Hemanahan MA says:

Hi hi hi…. here is mine!!!!!!!!!

Prolific Telugu director Krish comes to Tamil bringing with him his critically acclaimed Vedam as Vaanam with an ensemble cast of STR (Silambarasan), Bharath, Anushka, Vega, Saranya, Prakash Raj and others. Vedam had given Krish an admirable name to reckon with in the Telugu industry and for his debut in Tamil, the director has chosen the same premise which explored the various layers of human emotions, adhering largely to the original.

Vaanam follows a multi narrative format, which is fairly new to Tamil cinema. The product is about how the lives of five completely unrelated individuals from different places converge at one point cascading in a transformation of their persona and the ensuing corollary. The refreshing factor about Vaanam is it has eschewed the standard DNA of commercial flicks and Krish’s authority on the narrative comes to the fore with this delectably mounted product that tugs at your heart strings.

The characters in Vaanam are very ordinary, relatable mortals with their respective grey shades. Krish has not attempted to aggrandize them and they stand before you immaculately unornamented with their blemishes. STR as cable Raju, Bharath the rock star, Anushka the commercial sex worker, Saranya the helpless mom of an abducted son and Prakash Raj on the look out for his lost brother are the axles around which Vaanam hinges.

The screenplay is intelligently woven around these characters and Krish builds his narration in a neat pattern not losing steam or our attention anywhere. Although dialogues by Giri provide a significant value, it dazzles when Anushka insulted by policeman Radha Ravi says “we sell our souls unrobed but you guys do that with all your robes on” (naanga thuni avuthu velai porom, neenga thuniyoda velai poreenga) or when she jocularly says that while for other jobs, experience is a big plus but in flesh trade, it is just the reverse. Giri’s caliber as an effective dialogue writer is revealed when STR in a choked voice states that truth needs courage and lies do not. And mind you, Vaanam is replete with such gems.

All the artists have performed well and have equal screen presence. But the finest moments, of course, belong primarily to STR who reiterates that at the hands of a good script and a director, he can walk away with all the acting honors. The testimony to this is the scene when he snatches the money bag from Saranya and the vicissitude of emotions that play on his face that toggles between greed and conscience. And the scene at the police station when Anushka wonders if his love was true, the profound expression on his face is noteworthy.

Anushka, the foul mouthed sex worker oozing oodles of oomph meets the sensual demands of her character but sans vulgarity brings tears while pleading to the doctor to save her friend saying that she is ready to sleep with him innumerable times. Bharath delivers a subdued performance and Prakash Raj is his usual best. While Vega, Soniya and Jasmine are adequate, Saranya, Santhanam and VTV Ganesh have delivered a natural and neat portrayal. The scenes with VTV Ganesh are enjoyable and when he talks about standing in front of director Shankar’s house with Rahman as company is hilarious. Santhanam as STR’s friend is his perfect humorous foil. Anushka’s transgender friend Karpuram and Saranya’s father-in-law are impressive.

Under Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music, the opening song ‘Who am I’ showcases Bharath’s dancing skills which is youthful and peppy. The latest youth anthem ‘Evandi Onna Pethan’ is well picturized and STR’s adeptness with his feet and Nirav Shah’s brilliant camera work in the number are noticeable. Although ‘No money no honey’ is enjoyable, it does not add value to the film’s progress in any way.

Nirav Shah’s cinematography is appreciable and the angles and lighting sensibilities up the production value of the film. The different type of lighting at the lodge is just an example. With his tight frame composition, Editor Anthony is impressive.

Even though Vaanam is alluring in most aspects and travels linearly on the attempted track, the cinematic feel of the climax is a placid wart. The track ‘No money no honey’ is apparently forced and brings down the tempo of the film.

Director Krish makes his impactful debut with a different narrative format that holds the attention of the audience. Vaanam is succulent with diverse complex human emotions from deceit to greed to rage to remorse. The film has a plot that can find patrons among wider variety of audience as the theme of humanity is much a catholic one that transcends barriers.

  13. Aishwarya says:

After audukalm, vaanam is wonderful film

  14. Am not Simbu fan, but still the movie is very good & tears will pour in the End. The movie is well furnished & handled well. Especially the dialogues are very added advantage to the movie. HATS OFF to new comer Gnanagiri the dialogue writer of Vaanam

  15. Excellent movie..every human being should watch ths movie…str rocks again after vtv..Hats off to str and the entire team for bringing such a different concept”Humanity”

  16. Sarvan says:

One of the best movie of the year…although this type of screenplay format is tried before in Ayutha Ezthu…this movie was refreshing and makes one very emotional…Firstly, the big plus point of the movie is Simbu’s acting, I always abhorred Simbu’s buildups, but his acting in the movie was top class, particularly all the scenes that start from his robbing, till the scene, when he stands in the dark and feels after he gives back the money. The scene, where he puts his own money to the robbed one, has a strong impact. He even makes fun of himself, when one of the rowdies chasing him in the starting scenes, utters a punch dialogue. All comedy scenes with Santhanam’s one liners is a treat, with Ganesh proving apt foil. Although, I fully enjoyed the comedy, the second half and the moving climax is the only thing in my mind, when I left the theatre. Bharath’s climax scene with his mother’s reaction was unexpected and great. The part involving Prakashraj had a lot of stereotypical things, but the director also breaks those stereotypes, bringing out the human element. Anuska’s part does not mingle with the storyline that much, but her acting in the hospital and her relationship with her transgender friend is positive. Importantly, the music of Yuvan particularly the Vaanam song, and its apt usage in key scenes was great work. It brings out how humanity and their ability to forgive and accept their mistakes, is greater than god. From my all years of film watching, this is the first time, I felt the lyrics of a song, fits very well and even elevates the scene. In addition, the person who plays the grandfather’s character makes an impact…the young boy’s Maths connection in the initial and the final scene is well brought, with film ending positively. Although, the screenplay format, and even the hero’s character may seem very different from a normal Tamil film, and people may find difficult to adjust to it, I hope they will adjust and appreciate this Gem of a movie from Krish. Hats off to you Krish….

  17. Pankajam, Salem, Tamil Nadu says:

Cable Raja (Silambarasan) who lives in Chennai, is a happy-go-lucky cable guy who makes a rollicking entrance worthy of his status and his character. Together with his friends, Seenu (Santhanam) and Ganesh (Ganesh Janardhanan), Raja roams the streets, connects cables and is also desperate to make money, so he can gain passes for a certain premier event. His girlfriend Priya (Jasmin Bhasin) is stinking rich, and the only way to gain her family’s consent is to play the rich boyfriend himself.
Saroja (Anushka Shetty), in Sulurpet, the Tamil Nadu-Andhra border, working her way as a sex-worker in a brothel, seeking a way out desperately. She wears bright red lipstick, revealing sarees and makes her escape with a friend as quickly as she can. In order to get away from there and launch her own business, she reaches Chennai and is caught by the police.
Bharath Chakravarthy (Bharath) aims to become a famous rock star and he starts his journey with his friends, including Laasya (Vega Tamotia), to give live performances. His mother doesn’t like the idea of her son wasting his life, so she wants him to go into the army like his father. Naturally, Bharath resists the idea, gains a live gig in Chennai and sets off.
Rahim (Prakash Raj) a devout Muslim whose wife Zara (Sonia Agarwal) has just been told that she’s pregnant. Rahim learns that his long-lost brother has just been sighted in Chennai, and sets off hotfoot. They get discriminated for being a Muslim and plan to leave for Dubai to make a living out there.
Revathy (Saranya Ponvannan) and her father-in-law, trying desperately to save her son from the clutches of a moneylender in Thoothukkudi. Working in the unforgiving uppalams, she comes to Chennai to gather funds by selling her kidney.
Due to various conditions all of them land up in a hospital. At the climax, Cable Raja gives up his life to save the people from the terrorists, while, Bharath gets shot from the terrorists and loses his hand, but still remains alive.

  20. Its proved that u guys have to depend on a telugu movie again to get a hit…..continue, we always have our stories for u poor pandis….

  21. Ayyampettai Arivudainambi Kaliyaperumal Indran says:

    Sky high

Sky is the limit, they say. With a film aptly titled Vaanam, director Krish and his team have tried for the second time the impossible- bringing together popular stars and making a multistarrer with them.

Vaanam, a remake of Telugu hit Vedam, successfully marks a new era in Tamil cinema- for being the first big multistarrer of the modern era. And apart from Krish, the credits also go to the producers, STR and other actors, and of course to the technical team.

The story is simple as well complex too. It talks about a set of characters, who are totally different from each other, and how they come together at one point of time. And there is a very good and strong message in the climax.

Cable Raja (Simbu), a cable operator, gets hold of a rich girlfriend (Jasmin Bhasin). He dupes her saying that he is rich kid and he is in search of money. Bharath Chakravarthy (Bharath) is an aspiring rock star and he is all set to give his first live performance.

Saroja (Anushka) is a prostitute, who dupes her employer and flees to the city to make a career on her own. And we have a Muslim couple (Prakash Raj and Sonia) and an oldman who wants money to save his grandson.

All how these different characters comes together unitensionally for a noble cause is Vaanam is all about. The film is straight forward and makes us to think, besides providing entertainment.

As credits have already been given to the director and actors, let’s talk about another important highlight of Vaanam. It’s Yuvanshankar Raja’s music, which bears the entire weight of the movie. But for some confusions in the script, Vaanam is a welcome addition to the list of quality films in Kollywood.

  22. Ayyampettai Arivudainambi Kaliyaperumal Indran says:

Simbu’s sudden image changeover through ‘Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya’ had gradually increased the rate of his fans following him. With the actor opting for a multi-starrer project giving up his mass image, it furthermore added more expectations for this film ‘Vaanam’. Filmmaker Krish the acclaimed filmmaker Krish has won laurels for being an absolute trendsetter in Telugu film industry for making films based on international standards on both narrative and technical aspects. His ‘Gamyam’ was remade in Tamil as ‘Kadhalna Summa Illa’ (not directed by Krish), which received good reviews. He makes his debut directorial in Tamil film industry with this one. The film boasts of ensemble star-casts of Bharath, Anushka Shetty, Prakash Raj, Sonia Agarwal, Santhanam, Ganesh, Jayaprakash, Saranya, Vega, Jasmine and others.
The film vaanam revolves around 5 different stories that converge at climax.
Bangalore – Bharath an aspiring rock star along with his music band has always had passion for music and he is in love with Vega, who happens to be a part of his group. They’re on their way to perform a show in Chennai.
Sullurpet at Andhra-Tamil Nadu border Saroja (Anushka) is a sex-worker and decides to escape to Chennai along with her friend- transgender Karpuram with the dreams of starting a brothel house.
Coimbatore – Rahim (Prakash Raj) is a good-hearted Muslim, but remains in the bad pages of police department.
Tuticorin – a widowed mother (Saranya) and her father-in-law desperately working for a better life. A goon drags her son as a hostage to work in his salt farm and insists he would
free him only after they settle down the borrowed money with interest. With no options left, both of them depart to Chennai for selling her kidney and get the money.
Chennai – Cable Raja (Silambarasan), a freewheeling cable operator, who often swindles the collection money from his boss and spends it for his girl friend (Jasmine). He makes her believe that he is a rich billionaire. A heavy demand for money rises when she asks him to book couple passes for New Year eve party in a 5 Star Hotel that costs Rs. 39, 999/-
All these characters’ life is interwoven at a point as they come across each other in a Government Hospital, where the terrorists have plotted bomb attack.
What unfolds next is a shocking surprise as you would walk out of theatres with grand applause.
If ‘Ko’ had a message conveyed for youth, ‘Vaanam’ overshadows it heavily. Trust us! ‘Ko’ might have few illogical quotients like the other ones. Especially the climax is heart-wrenching and at the same time it leaves us astonished. Tons of appreciations of Silambarasan for choosing this project… Since the film revolves around 5 different stories, his portions are limited, but has a substantial value.
Finally, Bharath has managed to make a strong comeback. Having come across continuous flops, it’s time for his fans to rejoice. The actor makes a decent performance. More than any character, his role remains as the center of attraction, merely because of his nature. He dreams of different plans, but goes succumbed to an unexpected destination making him a hero overnight. The song ‘Who Am I’ has the question for his character and in climax, it has the answer.
Don’t overlook Anushka just as a glam-doll here. She might be playing the role of a sex- worker, but then she has something more than her skin show to expose her. A fabulous performance… Watch out for her conversation with the doctor during climax that will skip couple of our heartbeats. Prakash Raj sleepwalks through his role and so is Sonia Agarwal. But she doesn’t have much to perform here. Vega does justice to her role as a peppy young girl. As usual, Saranya emotes with an intense depth towards the situations. The actor enacting the role of desolated old man is impressive.
Director Krish has very well crafted the plot, formed characterization and brings an engrossing screenplay for audiences.
Though we might be confused on the proceedings for the first 30minutes, we are gradually drawn into the film before it proceeds to second half. The complete second hour is filled more off ‘thrill’ and ‘emotional’ moments. There are few sequences that will leave you on edge-seats, especially the climax and more moments that will soak our eyes in tears. Especially, watch out Silambarasan, where he reforms and returns back to the hospital unaware of the unexpected circumstances.
Almost by end of first half, we have all songs including an additional number dubbed from Telugu version. But it’s ‘Vaanam’ crooned by Yuvan Shankar Raja that stands out as the best number. It relentlessly occurs throughout the film as it happens to be the soul of movie.
The first half has some shaky movements of camera and we witness a complete transformation in angles during second half. Reason – we have Nirav Shah picking up the lens. Anthony’s editing is best. Krish has made some changes in the screenplay from original version ‘Vedam’ so as to suit the tastes of Tamil Nadu audiences.
The film doesn’t have any minuses and ‘Vaanam’ will remain as a best work in the career of almost every member, who are part of it. Tamil film industry gets a talented filmmaker Krish, who directly gets into A-league of filmmakers.
