Raana team met the press on the evening of 29th April to give the basic details of the film. At this press meet director K.S Ravikumar, actress Deepika Padukone, Soundarya Rajnikanth, cinematographer Rathnavelu and art director Rajeevan were present. Rajnikanth was also to attend this meet but as he was admitted to hospital following uneasiness, he had to miss it.
K.S Ravikumar said, “This press meet is a result of impromptu planning by Rajini sir. We planned this only last night as he felt that talking to the press and providing basic details about the film will be a good idea. We sat all night and Rajini sir invited everyone over phone at that odd time so that they can make it to the meet. Again, early morning we had to do the pooja and can a few scenes. People were pampering him with food and he ended up eating more than required and that resulted in vomiting. That is why he is in the hospital and there is nothing to worry for he will be home tonight. I apologize for his absence”
After clearing the air about the Superstar Rajnikanth’s health the director spoke about the movie, “As per schedule the shooting of Raana will go on for 220 whole days and the movie will release in 2012. A.R Rahman will be composing music and he has given us six tracks. One of the songs was shot today. The movie is set in the 17th century but it does not have any relation with Soundarya’s animation film ‘Sultan- The warrior’. Deepika Padukone has been extremely cooperative at the shooting today and I am very happy to have chosen her. I hope she continues to offer this co-operation until the very end for the movie to shape up well. Rajnikanth plays three roles in this film but he will appear in innumerable get-ups. He will be paired with two more ladies but we have not rounded off them yet and work is going on in full swing to confirm that soon.”
As the press was reveling with the Raana news, actress Deepika Padukone clad in beautiful red saree and golden choli said a few words. She gushed that it is great to be working in a Tamil film and that too with big and successful people like Rajnikanth and K.S Ravikumar. She confessed that she herself had doubts if she could carry off the 17th century look but she is now convinced that she can, for her costumes, make up and look have been devised with great care.
Superstar’s daughter Soundarya Rajnikanth who will be the technical director of Raana spoke next. She said that ‘Sultan-The warrior’ is her brain child and Raana has no similarities to it. Answering questions about Sultan being shelved Soundarya clarified that the project is very much happening but is taking a lot of time. She said she will be simultaneously working on Sultan. She also added that ever since she saw full length 3D animated films, she has wanted to make one and to make one like that in Tamil it definitely needs the pull that her father Rajnikanth has that will draw the audience.
The press meet was a very informative session where all questions and speculations were answered. Though we would have loved to hear a few words from the Superstar, all we hope now is he should get well soon and enthrall us in Raana.
Raana: The journey begins
The shooting of Superstar Rajnikanth’s Raana, directed by K.S Ravikumar and produced by Eros International, began today. Producer, Panchu Arunachalam sounded the clap board, RM Veerapan switched on the camera, and K Balachander directed the first shot in an auspicious ritual that was held at the Pillaiyar Temple in AVM studios today at 9.45 am.
The Superstar was looking dashing, dapper, and about half his actual age in a warrior’s costume. Leading Lady, Deepika Padukone looked lovely in a gorgeous blue sari with a maroon and gold border. Latha Rajinikath and daughters Aishwariya and Soundarya were also present.
The VIPs present at the momentous occasion included Muktha Srinivasan, SP Muthuraman, RC Sakthi, R Thiagarajan, Kavignar Vaali, Mahendran, AVM Saravanan, Sivaji Ramkumar, Prabhu, RB Choudhary, S.A Chandrasekar, P Vasu, Suresh Krishna, Kalaipuli S Dhanu, Vairamuthu, CV Rajendran, A Jaganathan & Cho Ramasamy.

The film will have Rajnikanth playing the hero while Deepika Padukone and Ileana D’Cruz are his onscreen pairs and Sonu Sood is the baddie who will fight Rajnikanth in Raana. Speaking about this film, K.S Ravikumar has said, “Raana has a strong story, a very interesting ensemble cast of actors coupled with super star Rajnikanth in a triple role and promises to have some stunning visual effects that will surely take Indian cinema to the next level.”
The press note from the producers states, “Eros International along with NextGen Films, will produce the film through Raana Production Ltd., UK.”
Music for Raana will be scored by Oscar award winner A.R Rahman. Rathnavelu will wield the camera and editing by Anthony. The technical director is Soundarya Rajnikanth, of Ocher Visual Effects UK, a subsidiary of Ocher Studios Pvt Limited. Emmy award winner Charles Darby of Eyeqube Studios, will be the creative and special effects director on the film.

Superstar Rajnikanth’s ‘Raana’ took off grandiosely in the studios of AVM in Chennai. Following by a Pooja that was attended by Superstar’s most favorite pals and film celebrities, the film started rolling in the backdrops of a huge set that erected in Studios. Soundarya Rajnikanth cleared off speculations on airs about the connection between ‘Sultan The Warrior’ and ‘Raana’ saying that there is nothing common between these films.
Rajnikanth’s Raana: First Information Report (FIR)
For the past three days, director K S Ravikumar and his team have been busy canning a song sequence for Superstar Rajinikanth starrer Rana. “A number set in the 17th century, it is being shot on a lavish set in AVM Studios,” sources say.
Saying that portions on Deepika Padukone alone are being canned now, they say: “Since doctors have advised rest for Rajini sir, he will join the shoot only after a week. Without wasting the time, Ravikumar has been using Deepika’s callsheet.”
Remember Rajini was admitted in the intensive care unit (ICU) of St Isabel Hospital in Chennai Friday after a bout of vomiting in the morning. He was discharged in the evening and there is nothing to worry about his health, doctors said.
The day started off fine. After finishing the first shot of Rana, which went to floors Friday, the top actor of Tamil cinema started feeling a little uncomfortable. After some time, he said that he was feeling very uneasy, following which he was rushed to the hospital.
