‘Mappillai’, one of the biggest blockbuster hits of superstar Rajnikanth, has been remade with his son-in-law Dhanush playing the lead role opposite newcomer Hansika Motwani. The producers have conveniently decided to release the film on 8th April, a few days after the World Cup cricket final, so that the film’s box-office prospects remain unaffected by the Cup fever.

Directed by Siraaj, who earlier made Dhanush’s ‘Padikadhavan’, the film’s script has been ‘altered’ so as to suit the taste of today’s youths though the main script remains the same as that of the Rajni-starrer. Mani Sharma has scored the music while Venkatesh is the cinematographer of the film, which would witness the return of Sayaji Shinda in a negative role after a long time.
The film also marks the comeback in Tamil films for Manisha Koirala, who got married last year. Manisha plays the role of Dhanush’s mother-in-law, made legendary in the original version by the late actress Srividya. Says Dhanush, “I thoroughly enjoyed working in ‘Maappillai’ since the script was so racy and the team was friendly”.
As Dhanush is on a roll with successive hits in ‘Uthamaputhiran’ and ‘Aadukalam’, expectations are obviously high on ‘Maappillai’, released by Sun Pictures worldwide.
