‘Kaavalan’ is no doubt a different Vijay film. Yet, it is no different movie for it has got nothing big to offer but for Vijay’s terrific screen presence coupled with his neat performance and an emotional climax that comes with a twist.
Take away Vijay & Vadivelu (who provides relief in a few scenes), ‘Kaavalan’ could make you squirm on seats, courtesy an outdated script and age-old style of narration. A few compromises to the original version (Malayalam hit ‘Bodyguard’) to suit the image of Vijay too fails to work big time.
In other words, ‘Kavalan’ could be a classic example of how a potent knot could be diluted in the name of making it a ‘commercially viable’ product. One good sign is that Vijay coming forward to be part of a project which doesn’t portray him as a demigod.
Coming to the story, Bhoominathan (Vijay), a carefree youngster, is made by his father (‘Nizhalgal’ Ravi) to join the household of Muthuramalingam (Rajkiran), a don-turned-do gooder in a village near Madurai, as a bodyguard.
As there is a threat to the life of Muthuramalingam’s daughter Meera (Asin), he asks Bhoominathan to accompany her to the college and provide security cover. As Meera feels Bhoominathan’s presence as a disturbance, she plays a prank on him, despite a warning from her friend Maadhu (Mithra Kurian).
Slowly, Meera falls for the charm and good heart of Bhoominathan and all hell breaks loose when Muthuramalingam, who never allows anyone deceive him, comes to know about this. What follows is a dragging climax, which however is emotional and touching.
Vijay is the real one-man army who saves the film to a great extent. It is his charm and performance that work big time in ‘Kavalan’. Asin is good but her much talked about chemistry with Vijay (in ‘Sivakasi’ and ‘Pokkiri’) is missing.
Vadivelu as Amavasai provides comic relief on very few occasions. Mithra Kurian, Rajkiran, Roja, KK, M S Bhaskar and ‘Pithamagan’ Mahadevan have performed well, but only have little scope as it is Vijay’s show all the way.
Vidyasagar is back with ‘Kavalan’ and his background score is good. So are a couple of songs. Cinematography by Ekambaram and editing by Gowri Shankar add value to the end product.
The script has many loopholes for there are many unanswered questions. One good example is that why ‘Pithamagan’ Mahadevan, who challenges to kill Asin at any cost, vanishes all of a sudden.
Siddique is a director with a magic touch in Malayalam. And in Tamil too, we have enjoyed his movies, especially ‘Friends’ with the same Vijay. However, as far as ‘Kaavalan’ is concerned, we have to conclude the review with a dialogue oft-repeated by Vadivelu in the film – ‘Avarey confuse aayitaaru pola irukku…’

Hip Hip Hooray!!! Cheer up Vijay fans!!! Ilayathalapathy is back with a bang. The actor had travelled through league of masala potboilers and after a long time strikes spectacularly with a breezy romantic entertainer. ‘Kaavalan’ is a poignant love story that will soak your hearts emotionally as you walk out of theatres. If you were yearning to watch Vijay as the same old romantic boy in ‘Kadhalukku Mariyadhai’ and ‘Thullatha Manamum Thullum’, yes ‘Kaavalan’ is the right choice.
Director Siddique and Vijay came up with a splendid entertainer in ‘Friends’ and have now again done a great job again. It looks like Vijay hasn’t interfered into the direction department and has given complete freedom to the filmmaker. Perfect! Things work out well with the narrative style of Siddique. The filmmaker has modified the complete screenplay from original version ‘Bodyguard’.
Boominathan (Vijay) idolizes Muthuramalingam (Rajkiran) and upon the request of his parents, accepts to work with the latter as his Bodyguard. There enters Muthuramalingam’s rival, who had lost his daughter since she committed suicide, the reason being rejection by Muthuramalingam’s son. While Boominathan protects Muthuramalingam, his rival threatens the life of his daughter Meera (Asin). Boominathan is sent to college along with Meera and Madhu for protecting them from the threat. Meera tries to distance from Boominathan by calling him from Private Number and Boominathan falls in love with the girl without knowing it is Meera herself. At one point, Meera too feels herself getting attracted to Boominathan and expresses her desire to meet him in person. What happens then forms the crux of the film.
As mentioned earlier, this is a real surprise for Vijay fans. He makes an appealing performance with his sweet looks of boy-to-next-door. Though there are some action sequences in this movie, it has been done subtly. The dance sequences are so impressive and his comedy portions with Vadivelu are so rocking. Asin is so matured with her performance and it’s nice to see her back in Kollywood. She has equal footage on pars with Vijay. Her emotional performance during second half is trenchant and she has chances of bagging more awards for her acting. Newcomer Mithra Kurien looks cute and her performance level is appreciable. Vadivelu’s comedy liners are extraordinary and he accompanies Vijay throughout the film. The lines Abraham Lincoln invented Telephone, Bharathiraja or Bharathiar throws laughter-riot.
Siddique’s screenplay needs special mention as he blends comedy and romance in equal proportions with unexpected twists and turns during last 20minutes.
Musical score by Vidhyasagar is okay. ‘Sada Sada’ and ‘Yaaradhu’ are melodious treats. The background score is good in places. Cinematography by Ekambaram brings cool visuals, especially for the songs.
On the whole, ‘Kaavalan’ is a surprising treat not only for his fans, but for the universal audiences as well. Specifically, it will be close to heart for female audiences.
Verdict: Big Surprise from Ilayathalapathy.

in malayalam dileep’s acting is very poor, thats why its flopped in malayalam…here vijay rocked to core…final 15 min his heart touching…i quited vijay’s films after villu & i never seen vettaikaran & sura…but i recommended this flick to all movie lovers
Alas! Never expected such a movie from Vijay. Having delivered so many flops in the row, how could he make such things now?
‘Kaavalan’ didn’t manage to have a big opening like Vijay’s previous films, but guess what? The film is superb and exceeds everyone’s expectations. One could have never imagined that Vijay would come up with such films. Yes, Ilayathalapathy strikes back with a bang that lets everyone to be brimmed with surprise. The film is so nice and appealing that it doesn’t carry traces of ‘Pokkiri’, ‘Villu’, and ‘Sura’ and so on.
‘Kaavalan’ can be regarded as the best family entertainer with Siddique bringing forth a beautiful poetic romantic drama. And when you walk out of theatres, your hearts might be drenched in emotions with the unexpected ultimate twist that occurs during climax.
For the first time, one could witness continuous claps during the last 15minutes in theatre and such is the significance of Siddique’s screenplay.
Bhoominathan (Vijay) owes a lot to the most influential person Semmanur Muthuramalingam (Raj Kiran) as he has helped his family a lot. When Bhoominathan learns that Muthuramalingam’s life is in danger, he decides to go as his bodyguard. After saving his family of wife (Roja), daughter Meera (Asin) and Karthi (KK), Muthuramalingam assigns Bhoominathan to offer security to Meera and her friend Madhu (Mithra Kurien). Meera is annoyed with Bhoominathan’s behavior as bodyguard and never heeds to her plea of behaving normal. Finally, Meera hatches a plan of diverting his attention by making prank calls as a girl in the name of Ammu Kutti. Bhoominathan assumes her to be his childhood love, who had the same name and falls in love with her. But situations go in unexpected way with an unpredictable twist during climax.
Director Siddique has made so many changes from the original version ‘Bodyguard’ savoring to the tastes of Tamil audiences. The first half proceeds with enjoyable moments with the right mix of comedy, action and drama. As the story travels to the second hour, the tale becomes more emotional bringing audiences wonder what’s gonna happen in the climax.
Vijay looks bright and energetic as in his yesteryear romantic movies like ‘Kadhalukku Mariyadhai’, ‘Thullatha Manamum Thullum’. His innocuous nature is very well delineated by Siddhique and nice to see him away from those over exaggerated action characters. Even he has underplayed with his dance sequences that are so cool and captivating. Asin makes a good comeback with a great role and she can keep her fingers crossed as she will win awards for the film. Vadivelu, the comedy king rocks with his hilarious portions. Raj Kiran does justice to his role and newcomer Mithra Kurien is a special surprise as she does a great job.
Vidhyasagar’s songs kindle nostalgic memories with the songs done in his own trademark while cinematography is top-notching
As on whole, ‘Kaavalan’ is an excellent romantic entertainer that is precisely for the audiences from 8-80years.
‘Kaavalan’ is not only for the fans of Vijay, for the universal audiences…

‘Kaavalan’ is a good movie to be watched by the whole family. The movie has a simple story, but the presentation is highly acclaimable. This movie is a remake of Malayalam film ‘Bodyguard’. The same director, who carved the Malayalam version has directed the Tamil version as well and will also direct the Hindi version with Salman Khan in lead.
Story
“Kaavalan” revolves around Arjun (Vijay) who has a habit of attracting anyone with his heroic deeds. He also starts admiring big celebrities and wants to become a bodyguard to them. Rajkiran plays the role of a big business man in the film and actress Roja plays the role of his wife. Meera (Asin) is their college going daughter, who needs protection as her father has numerous business rivals.
Arjun (Vijay) is given the job of a Bodyguard to Meera and she accepts to be guarded by Arjun as well. Arjun (Vijay) follows Meera to her college and the friends of the female lead start to get irritated by Arjun’s presence.
With a plot hatched by Meera and her friend, Arjun traps into the love trap of a girl, which he assigns with the name of ‘Private Number’. Meera calls on phone to Arjun and speaks ill about her self, in order to make Arjun leave his job as a bodyguard.
After few incidents Meera feels the love of Arjun and also falls for him. Meera suggest Arjun, to take her lover and run away to a far off place. Arjun agrees to do so, as he is innocent that his love is Meera on phone only.
Rajkiran finds out that his daughter Meera is in love with arjun and they are ready to run away. Meera tells a lie to her father Rajkiran that she is not the person, who is in love with Arjun and it is another girl. Rajkiran starts to enquire about the facts and if he finds another girl at the station, he promises to leave Meera. Rajkiran also warns his daughter, that he will kill Arjun, if no girl turns up to the station.
Meera in a fear of her father, tells everything to her friend actress Mithra Kurian (friend of Meera) to tell the whole truth to Arjun. But Mithra falls for Arjun on the first sight and admits that she is his lover on phone.
Arjun marries Mithra and then a small boy is born. After many years Mitra dies due to illness and writes a whole diary to her son, in order to reveal the truth. Arjun and his son go to Rajkiran, where they learn that Meera isn’t’ married and is waiting for her lover.
Arjun’s son learns about the whole truth instantly and then they unite to end the film story.
Performances
Actor Ilayapathi Vijay has done it finally as his project “ Kaavalan” which was a prestige to him is declared to be a hit. As usual, Vijay has justified the role and his fans will love to see it.
Asin carries the role of Meera in an elegant way. Asin will increase her stature in the Tamil film industry with this film. May be nayantara would have justified the role of meera in a better role.
Other characters played by Roja, Moithra Kurian, Vadivelu, Livingstone, Mahadevan, Krishna Kumar Nizhalgal Ravi, MS Bhasker, Yuvashree, madhan Bob, were also apt for their characters.
Music of Kaavalan will be entertaining to his fans and has two tunes as hit tunes.
Direction by Siddique has carved the film in an extra ordinary way. The director presented the movie in a novel way and that will appeal the major section of the audiences.
Director Siddique has worked out well to balance the movie for both Mass & Class Audiences. This is the 2nd movie from Vijay-Siddique’s combination & 3rd one from Vijay-Asin and is a good one with a humorous background.
Vijay(Bhoominathan) is very much fond of goondas right from his childhood. He loved to take risks and to be brave always. He starts learning to become a brave goonda by becoming a bodyguard for famous anti socials. Sometime later, he decides to become the bodyguard of a wealthy and powerful man Rajkiran. He achieves his luck after saving Rajkiran from a danger. Vijay thus becomes the bodyguard of Rajkiran’s only daughter Asin. Vijay follows Asin to her college as her Bodyguard. Asin and her friend Mithra Kurien gets irritated with him following them all day.
The two girls started making fake calls to Vijay’s number, trying to get rid off him. Asin is the girl who calls him telling she is very much in love with him and all those stuffs. At first things goes smooth but later on it gets into serious issues. What happens next deals with the climax.
Vijay, Asin and Vadivelu have done their roles quite well. Vadivelu who stays with bodyguard vijay as a servant will makes us to laugh through out the film. As usual vijay’s rocking dance performance continues in kaavalan too. Step up, Sada sada & Vinnai kappan are rocking with vijay’s screen presence. Pattampochi song is type of a yesteryear’s melody. Vidayasagar has scored good music for the film and also visuals by Ekambaram is excellent.
After years vijay has comes out of his masala formula, kaavalan is a family entertainer. The climax lights to one in Kuch kuch Hota Hai. Kaavalan is not an extra ordinary one but is worth watchable.
Firstofall, Iam a big FAN of Vijay but too much disappointed with Kavalan. Film has nothing interesting tobe called a great movie. Only climax is okay. The original Malayalam version was too good but it’s spoiled in tamil in name of commercial. Why can’t Vijay try something different like suriya in singam, dhanush in aadukalam etc. He cannot be a superstar without acting (try different getups). When superstar can sit for hours to do makeup with shankar, what is after all he to reject a costume for 3 idiots. Just dancing and coming in colorful dress is not acting boss. Now I know why he rejected 3 idiots (he cannot act). Looks like Vijay has fell from top and now its tough for him to getup. Politics is the next best option boss. Bye Bye Vijay…

Obviously everyone who is raving about this movie in this comments section is an ardent Vijay fan. To be completely truthful, this movie has nothing to offer that has not been delivered already. It is waste of your time. You are better off watching TV at home. This movie marks the beginning of the fall of Vijay. I do not think Vijay has a future in cinema. It is better for him to jump into politics following the foot steps of Vijayakanth. I wish Vijay all the success.

Kavalan is better than ‘Sura’. Kavalan is not match to ‘Aadu Kalam’. Danush is a real character actor.
Vijay movie is for retarded people. There are plenty of uneducated or retarded people in Tamilnadu. Government should help improve literacy in Tamilnadu. Only when people are educated will they stop watching non-sense movies such as Vijay movies.

I do feel for you and I know you really want a hit, but as you have Asin on this I pray4this film2b a flop. Never going to forget her ignoring the Tamil producers council and going to Lanka on the demand of Salman khan who does not care as he dared the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce (SIFCC) and shoot his film in sri lanka. And Asin tours with wife of President Mahinda Rajapaksa who wikileaks exposed as being responsible for the massacre of more than 20000 Tamil civilians in the final throes of the Sri Lankan civil war.
Ilaya thalapathy prove that he will do anything…that many problem 2 release in this flim….i pray 2 god that thalapathy have do good flim and his flim want 2 be the blockbuster hit…thalapathy valka….

Vijay used to be a challenge to Ajith during his ‘Gilli’ days, now he is a challenge to Danush. ‘Kavalan’ is in a neck and neck competition with ‘Adukalam’. I think Vijay will find his competition with Danush a lot more challenging than Ajith. Ajith was clearly not a talented person, but Danush on the other hand is a superstar in his own rights, other than the obvious reasons. I wish Vijay all the luck. I have an advice for Vijay. ‘Dey Vijay, try to be a grown up man and stand on your own, rather than having your father speak for you all the time’. Your father is your real ‘Kavalan’.

Honestly speaking just now I saw Kavalan movie by downloading it from the Internet. In Maharashtra, it is very hard to see Tamil movies in theaters. Really, I enjoyed the movie very much, it is awesome. I give 99 out of 100 for this movie. You know why I cut one mark. Because, I was expected that Vijay must call Asin as “Ammukutti” in the climax. But, it did not happen, which is why I disappointed more about this movie and I reduced. I hope director should know about this and there must be a specific reason behind this. If anyone know about this please reply.
Basically, I like Ajith rather than Vijay. Don’t think that I dislike Vijay, I hate Vijay fans not Illaya thalabathi Vijay.
