Surya skipped the premier of his latest film ‘Ratha Charithiram’, which was to be arranged to be shown in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur on Thursday, a day prior to the release of the film’s theatrical release on 3rd December.
Though the official reason given was that the injury in the spinal cord suffered by Surya during the shooting of ‘7am Arivu’, sources say that there could also be a Malaysian ‘angle’ to the decision of the star in skipping the premier. The film stars Vivek Oberoi, who invoked the wrath of many Tamilians by not choosing to skip the IIFA awards ceremony held in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo in June this year.
Some Tamil rights movements have called for boycott of the film as it stars Vivek Oberoi. Meanwhile, during his recent interview to a Bangalore-based English daily, Surya had reportedly said that it was ‘meaningless’ to oppose Vivek Oberoi and the film and that if need be, he would align with Vivek in helping Sri Lankan Tamils. He is reported to have said that the Lankan issue was now a ‘dead one’ and that it was futile to discuss it now.
It’s precisely these comments which have made the Tamil rights movements in Malaysia a bit uneasy and they were planning to register their protest during Suriya’s visit to their country. Due to Suriya’s absence, the premier show itself was cancelled. Suriya has said in a press statement that he couldn’t honour his commitment due to the unexpected injury suffered during the shooting.
“I’d soon be going to Malaysia to meet my fans,” he has said.
