Shaam, who made a promising debut as hero in the late Jeeva’s ‘12-B’ a few years back, had his moments of glory in his chequered career but was somehow unable to make it to the top rung of heroes. In fact, he had both Simran & Jyothika (who were the leading heroines of that time) as his lead pair in 12-B.
His ‘Iyarkai’, directed by Jananathan, fetched the director a national award for ‘best director’. Shoddy selection of scripts and a dilemma as to whether to continue as a romantic hero or to switch to the action mode cost Shaam his market in Kollywood, observers point out.
He then moved over to Tollywood and accepted second-hero roles and negative roles. ‘Kick’, in which he played second fiddle to Ravi Teja, was a super-duper hit and endeared him to the masses in the Telugu land. Its’ Tamil remake, ‘Thillalangadi’, was also a hit film but that still didn’t fetch Shaam any new film offer in Kollywood.
Obviously disappointed at not getting any recognition for his ‘Thillalangadi’ role, Shaam has vented his resentment by saying that second heroes are treated shabbily by the media and the fans alike in Kollywood. “This is not the case in Tollywood,” he adds.
“Though I toiled a lot in Kollywood, I couldn’t find my footing here. Actually, the producers and directors narrate a script at the time of signing up but then toe a different storyline while filming the story. Many of my films have suffered because of this. Another reason could be that I don’t have any ‘godfather’ to prop me up.
“I earnestly hope my Agam Puram does well at the box-office. I have signed up three movies in Telugu, where they pay attention to second heroes and even the masses don’t fail to recognize you. It’s not the case in Kollywood where your face doesn’t even appear in the film’s poster,” said Shaam disappointedly.
