Sundar C is back with Nagaram which he has directed after a hiatus of five years. The film in which he also plays the lead is an extension of his debut acting vehicle Thalainagaram, however told in a different and interesting way.
It’s yet another underworld story, but what makes the movie interesting is its narration and no-nonsense performance by Sundar C, Anuya and Vadivelu. The swift screenplay also gives the movie a good impetus.
Gate Selvam (Sundar) is a criminal, who while serving his jail term is let out on the recommendation of his good friend and Police Inspector Sakkarapandi (Bose Venkat). The jail life brings a sea change in his life and Selvam decides to earn in right ways.
In the meantime, Selvam meets Bharathi (Anuya), a group dancer, and attracted towards her. A series of events lead Selvam to go back to his job and soon he realises that his friend Sakkarapandi is a transporter of contraband goods.
Selvam’s former boss and drug lord Bhai (G Srinivasan) wants to teach a lesson to Sakkarapandi. It’s now up to Selvam to decide to support whom- his ex-boss or former friend.
Sundar C has given a good performance. His years of experience behind and before the camera have certainly helped him a lot. Anuya of Siva Manasula Sakthi fame, playing the heroine, has done her part well.
But most impressive is Vadivelu. As Style Pandi, he evokes laughter in almost all scenes he appears. G Srinivasan, Bose Venkat, Ponnambalam and Nalini play their respective parts well.
Thaman’s music is okay. After Thalainagaram, Sundar has brought to light the life of underworld once again in Nagaram. On the flip side, length and violence could have been reduced. But these things, however, could hardly prevent you from enjoying the movie.
